Mid life crisis

At 52 I finally got a dream job
Very happy about it but I did have to give up a few things that were really important to me: volunteering as a firefighter, a short commute (2hr now vs 10 minutes [emoji15]) but most of all... working out.

The hardest part is having to accept the fact that by giving up working out - I essentially forced the start of my physical decline.

I basically reached my peak and it will never be better than what is was last year... I’m on full mid-life crisis now... [emoji24][emoji24]

Now I’m becoming aware of the inevitable aging and my own mortality...

Yeah... I’m in one of those moods [emoji855]
Congrats on the job but
I'm sorry but this is not your dream job with over a 2hr commute. I'm sorry but you can't waste that much time. Life is too short my friend. I'm a put shit on paper kind of guy....

That's 1,170 hours a year!!! That means you will spend right at 49 full 24 hour days a year just getting to and from work! WHAT! Stay there 10 years and out of those 10 years you will have spent 1.5 full years just commuting. My opinion...move or find a new job...

Good luck.

The train ride itself ain’t the issue. The issue is spending 4 hours getting to/from work.
True and as I live in neighboring CT the trip for me is 1.5hrs each way and I got a lot of work done while riding the train as I had a work laptop with me.

Driving is stressful enough with traffic and all that and I draw the line at a 2hr commute driving.

A train ride is not bad at all, and I myself used to work in NYC so the commute by train to Wall Street was worth it for me as I didn't also mind the walk from the train station to the building I worked in.

I agree with you
Going is not so bad, I get up at 5am and by 8 am at work. It’s coming back... I’m often in the office at 8-9pm so I end up in bed after midnight and that doesn’t leave much sleepy time... I might end up getting a studio somewhere in south Bronx. Harlem would be better but way too expensive ... we’ll see.

Ouch working late hours with that commute sure kills. Been there done that while working many systems deployment and support projects out in the city. The frenetic pace of the work I did really wore me out every damn day so I did prize the peace and rest I had on the weekends.

Now my current job is just 20 mins away from where I live...and it is in a hospital doing systems admin work.

Why do you have to give up working out?
i can see giving up the gear for health reasons or legal reasons or whatever, but not the exercise.

Even if you can only hit the gym once or twice per week and only go at it for a half hour, you'll still be far ahead of the majority in your age group.

Congrats on the job, by the way. It literally is a dream come true when you find something you love and get paid well for doing it. Haven't had the pleasure yet, myself.

You don't ever have to quit working out, that's just a, cop out. Unless it's for health reasons.

You can always train on your lunch, or find some time. A workout doesn't need to be 2 hrs especially at your age.

30 mins a few times a week of HIIT or something similar will work ...

Shit... Get some adjustable db's and keep them in your trunk...
