Millard, Beezil and any other Road Warriors

I know you guys are cycling, and maybe there's a few more guys on here. Beezil, isn't your brother a pro rider or something close?

Anyways, I'm just wondering how you guys mix your riding in with weight training. Unfortunately, the weather around my way hasn't been the greatest this year. I've been getting around 40 miles in each day, Sat and Sunday mornings. I try to get at least like a half-hour "time trial" ride in during the week as like a HIT cardio on Wed, which is my off day of lifting. I lift 4 days a week.

I'm only in my second riding season, and I know you guys have been at it for awhile. I got a pretty nice ride about 6 weeks ago. I rode a hand-me-down bike last year, and waited before I put money on the table. I golf, cycle, and obv. lift/"bodybuild". I wish I could find a cheaper habit [:o)]

What color spandex do you wear queer?[:o)]

I love trying to catch you fuckers in the back of the head with my mirror when you ride down the middle of the road @12mph.

HAHA!!! You sound like most of my friends. I ride closer to 20 near the shoulder instead of 12 in the middle though lol.

If you want a funny fag story, here goes. A couple weeks ago, I was doing my weekend 40 miler down to the beach and back. I got near the beach, and a car with a couple older teenagers went by me with windsurfers on their roof. Thought they were cool and one of them called me a fag out the window. In his defense, I was wearing spandex and riding a bike. I think he must have thought I was your average 140lb cyclist when he went by or something.

Wouldn't ya know they were stopped at a red light up ahead. I decided to teach him a life lesson. I sped up to his jeep, jumped off my bike, snatched him through the window and said "I'll show you how much of a fag I am when I rip you outta your car and fuck you in the ass over your hood. Then I'm gonna cum in your friends mouth."

I thought they were gonna die of heart attacks on the spot lol. All shakin and saying we didn't say anything mister as they went through the red light.

It was priceless. I loved hearing the driver yelling "holy fucking shit" when I was snatching up his friend.

Guess I'm lucky I didn't get stabbed but oh well. I felt like Gran Torino in spandex for a solid 10 minutes.

what specifically do you want to know?

my bro is a pro cyclist for Mikes Bikes in SF.

He's been training for the Leadville100 in Colorado…i think its the first weekend in august??? been awhile since we've comm'd.

anyhow… my cycling has really been lax'd lately as i have been mostly focused on weights and training with some Philipino fighters that are in town for the summer.

do you use STRAVA??? and a garmin gps comp… its a great training tool.

also, knowing your watts for the type of riding and training is invaluable.

speaking of rides… my brothers Specialized road bike, that he gets for free, (which is one of 3)…. hit the cash register at 15K. thats more than my first and second car. REDONK!

Its all carbon and weighs less than 13lbs. his MTB weighs in at 14… crazy how these bikes have come along… the lighter the more they cost.

additionally,

its hard to mix cycling and weights.

a typical ride for my brother or even myself when i was training for comp. was 3-4 hours and 75-100 miles…. 5-6days a week. Depending if there was a race that weekend.

if you have a job… for 8-10 hrs a day… that barely leaves time for weight training and personal time. Not that personal time is all its cracked up to be..

my brother does "0" weight training and tips the scale at 139.

so weights and cycling (or any endurance sport involving self propulsion) are antithesis of each other…

Yeah, that's what I was kind of getting at. Obviously, the 2 don't go together well. I was wondering how you rode while you were lifting. I assume you love to ride and lift, so if you're not competing at either, how do you set up your training? I'm sure if you're going to compete on the bike, you do everything to get ready for that, but if not, well...

I could see someone easily getting overtrained if they aren't careful.

I seem to get a good mix of both doing a regular 4-day lifting split w/ Wed off of lifting. Usually, Wed I'll do like a half-hour time trial (I usually get about 10 1/2 miles, and my route has some small climbs - I just keep trying to improve my time), and I do at least 40 Sat and Sun. It seems to help my recovery with weight training, if anything. If I push REAL hard on leg day in the gym, or on the bike on the weekends, I have to dial back on squats a bit, or slow down the pace a bit on the bike for the "longer" rides.

I know I won't be great at either, I did a 75 mile local race in the spring, and I was about 12-14 minutes behind the sponsored teams, but in the top 1/3 of the race. Think I came in like 41st of around 150 riders. Also thought I was going to have a heart attack multiple times, and bonked bad the last 5 miles. My leg was twitching so bad I had to hold a fence for like 10 minutes when I finished. They had a BBQ after and I was holding my nose and drinking pickle juice. The race teams were kicking back and enjoying beers like they didn't even go anywhere. It was a fun experience though.

I have been riding about 20 miles roundtrip to the gym 5-6 days per week with weekend ride of 30-60 miles on my day off from the gym. Time constraints are an issue. Cycling just takes too much time.

But sometimes I go on cycling "vacation" where I go 60 miles per day for a couple of weeks with a rest day every 4th day when I go to the gym.

I may lose a few pounds during this period but the recomposition afterwards is a lot of fun.

This type of alternating between cycling and bodybuilding has worked well for me.

I find using 2 cranks and 2 peddles
Too easy a lot of times, so I will usually
Take 1 side off, to keep riding more
Interesting .. I also don't use brakes

i do things in spurts and Im very competitive. So its an all or nothing type thing…. for me.

both sports like many activities take lots of time and dedication.

so I balance by using different activities as my cardio training…. that take less time.

i have a love for cycling but also need to balance the rest of my life and activities…

i recommend researching STRAVA and check the local routes that others have done… and use that as your motivation to continually ride faster. Each ride can be broken down into segments and hill climbs…. as well as, power / watt expenditures per segment or climb.

its really helpful… you can compete against yourself and other locals.

using a garmin cycle computer with GPS makes this extremely easy… and can connect to your smart phone while enroute.

Beezil I hear ya on spurts. I can't half ass anything.

Thanks for the tips. I will look that up this weekend. Climbing through mountains the next few days. Doing 50 tomorrow and through the weekend.

Well the mountain climbs were pretty intense. Had a good time.

I'm doing a USA cycling criterium race on Sunday am. My first sanctioned event so I will be a cat 5 rider. It's a 2.3 mile course and 18 mile race for cat 5.

Congrats.

How was the ride???

Thanks for asking but it sucked. I got a flat right after the roll out like 1/2 mile into the race. It took like 3 minutes for the neutral support car to even show up because it was so early and like 7 minutes before I got the tire changed. I was so far behind I just withdrew.
