Motherfucking back

I see you're like me lolol. Do some doc shopping (pun somewhat intended) and see who is good in your area then. It really makes a difference if you can find one with a sports background bc they'd be very familiar with the things we do.

Definitely try to find a sports medicine spot. I have one locally and all of the doctor's have backgrounds in sports and/or lifting themselves and many of them are team doctor's for a university or high school nearby. At a minimum they will know who to refer you to.

Fucking back problems - I feel your pain and frustration, my friend.

I don't have anything to offer that hasn't already been said except for my personal experience and the adjustments I made to my training. The nuts and bolts: I see a good chiropractor once in a while, I try to stretch and use my inversion table regularly, and most important, don't lift heavy anymore.

That last one is by far the most difficult task to maintain, as it deals with my ego and love for moving heavy ass weight. However, I remind myself that I'm not in my young twenties anymore and that I have much more important and fulfilling endeavors in my life than my total.

Take care. We'll talk soon.

I've also been there. Reoccurring. I saw the doc. Did the physical therapy which qualified me for the MRI. In the end, not any one thing can re-injure me though; just about anything could so I shifted my training a bit. I have to hand pick exercises as I'm not getting any younger. Good luck Brutus

Been there done that and ill tell you what worked for me
I stopped deadlifting completely. Thats the first thing. Its too damn demanding on the lumbar. You might have to shift gears here a lil bit. May seem like the end of the world but its not. You just have to deal with the reality of it. It will heal and it WILL do it again and again. So how many times you want to bash your basketball sized noggin against a concrete wall is up to you.

I had coaching help from DocD and visited chiros and been to the VA and checked every nook and cranny and finally decided back squatting was out also. I refitted, retooled and poured my heart and soul in to learning the mechanics of the FRONT SQUAT. Started from 135 and now a year later im getting close to a 495 FS! I will tell you now it has made a tremendous difference in my lower back pain and quality of life in general. I refuse to give up squatting and the mechanics of the front squat dictate a strong core and upright posture. It is far better on the back. Adapt, improvise and overcome. These are the lessons of life. You are older than me so i know you know this.

Heal get better and drop the deads bossman. If squats are still an issue you can still do lunges and bulgarian split squats which both can be done with impressive weight and are tremendous leg builders. If you have never committed to a bulgarian split squat program i highly encourage it. It is a extremely effective crossover movement that translates well to anything. Im using it in my quest to break a bigger FS total and is very effective. Very effective. When even the heaviest dumbbells arent heavy enough start strapping weight to your body or have some body piggy back. Yes sir, get it done. Deads aint the end of the world. Trust me i been there. I had to make those decisions. Life is better without them. But keep doing it and you wont be doing legs any more, period.
A fucked lower back will bring even the biggest, meanest SOB to his knees. Quality of life Brute
2017 is full of promise. Lets tackle this

Blew my back out again. I did it first six years ago moving a fish tank half full of water. Four years later it popped during a deadlift... i ignored it and kept pulling- pain for two weeks. Bad. I busted it about six months ago right after gall bladder surgery deadlifting again... on my back for two days and in pain for a week and a half. I had not worked up to the weight and figured that's why i blew it out. I spent the last six months carefully- EXTREMELY CAREFULLY. I squatted 315 for 10 last week and i NEVER had an issue squatting. Yesterday i was warming up a bit- 225. Third rep i went a little deep- butt wink i believe you call it, but i have these new knee sleeves that took ALL KNEE PAIN AWAY and i was really feeling it. Pop. Fell over backwards. Worst it has ever been. Scatia pain down both legs- definite sacrum injury as before. I cannot straighten my right leg when standing- tippie toe is all i can muster so i dont fall down. No comfortable position to lay.

Due to increasing frequency of the injury is this a get worse and worse thing? Is squatting and deadlifting done forever?

Drop them man. I havent done them in a few years. Youll miss them sure. But its better than eventualky taking yourself out of the gym for good

Hey Brutus bud,

Sorry to hear about your issues. Can't you just stop whinging though and push through?

The Most Important Thing You Will Ever Learn About Lifting Weights | Mark Rippetoe

"The reason that you and many other people can’t arch your low back and hold it there in a squat or deadlift is because you actually don’t know what position your back is in. Your kinesthetic sense for the position of your spine remains undeveloped. You may actually think it’s arched already when it’s really in flexion. An awareness of the position of your back is necessary for the control of that position. Until you can identify lumbar extension – what it feels like to have your lower back in a position where the erector muscles are in contraction – you won’t be able to assume this position when you want to, or when you have to, like in a squat or at the start of a deadlift."

@brutus79 sorry to hear about the injury man. Doc as well as others offered solid advice. The only thing I'll add is even after you do your research and find a well recommended sports meds Doc; get a second opinion, especially if there is cutting involved.

God speed on the recovery!

Also, what is the names of those new knee sleeves you've found?

Hey Brother, I was in the same spot as you after deadlifting that left me with sciatica pain down my left leg.

My doctor gave me pills for the pain and inflammation, she also wanted me to go to physical therapy. But after 1 week I couldn't deal with it and went back. I got an MRI and it showed a ruptured disc, unfortunately the ruptured part was on the sciatic nerve.

If possible, push really hard to get an MRI and you'll know what you're dealing with right away.

Unfortunately I had to have a microdiscectomy to remove the large mass that was pressing on the sciatica nerve.

I still squat and deadlift but I do not go heavy and I use a lifting belt.

Good luck.
Frank

@brutus79 Your MUST get a MRI thats the only way to know with any absolutism what and how bad the problem is.

I had to give up squats just like trukker. It sucks but a fuked back and having your women tie up your work boots is worse

Saw the title......so here I am[emoji1377]

As others might have said, reduce poundage and increase volume once healed and given the green light.

Good mornings 4 me, have done wonders over the past 20 plus years.[emoji1377]

You now have a chronic conditions that will raise it's ugly head again and again. Stop squatting and do leg press or hack squats from now on.

  • I feel your pain. Blew mine a few weeks ago lifting a manhole cover. Used a walker in my house for 3 days.. back to it again for a few weeks and I make sure I put my belt as tight as I can for support. I also keep in my mind that I have to baby it for a little while longer. It dosnt matter how heavy you train till it gets better. the only thing that matters is you are training. .

This is why I do some sets w/o weight posture n agility.

Thanks guys... forgive my ignorance, but who should i see? Ortho?
Neuro is who I seen. I also needed IMMIDIATE surgery. My pain was strikingly similar to yours. It was so bad that they actually had to put me under with anasthetics cuz I could not lay on my back for an MRI.

I'm only speaking from experience. This is not something that happened to someone I know nor is it something I heard. This just happened to me in December.
My suggestion is to request an MRI. The MRI is what determined how serious the injury was. If you saw my MRI you would see how close I was to become a parapalegic. I strongly suggest getting the MRI asap.
I also did mine while lifting.

My question is the same. When can I squat and dead? After 10 weeks I'm just getting back in the gym. I'll probably wait a year befor I squat and dead.
