I see there aren't many dirt riders here. I have an '01 Honda CR250 and both
my kids have Yamaha minis (TTR90 and PW80). They can't keep up with me for shit in the woods but we still have fun riding together.

I have had street bikes in the past. My last one was a V65 Sabre, which isn't that fast by todays standards, but back in the day it was pretty fast. I think it ran high 10 second quarters in the mags, which most 600's will do today. The wife and I took it down south about 10 years ago and ran Deal's Gap (318 curves in 11 miles). It would have been great on a crotch rocket but we still had a blast. If any of you guys live near NC/TN, give it a shot. You wont regret it! Another great ride is 555 out of Zanesville, OH. It's about 50 miles long and it's all unmarked, hilly, curvy road that will make you sick to your stomach after a while. Good fun for sure!

hey guys I am a newbie here, but I ride. I got into 2 years ago. Wanted a Harley and an R6, seeing as though I couldn't afford a harley and the R6 was way to much to handle, I settled for a Honda Sabre. So far so good.

Hey THL, my buddy and I are looking at getting some dirt bikes this fall. I am still not sure about the 2 or 4 stroke. I hear good/bad about both. I figure I will buy a used one that way If I dump it I won't cry to much.

Motorcycles are bad news. When I was 18 I had a 1997 Kawasaki Ninja 250. Very small but it was my first bike. My dad insisted that it was too dangerous and convinced me to sell it. A good friend of mine was killed on his bike last Tuesday. He was only 21. Those things are too dangerous and I don't see anything about them that is worse risking your life. If you are doing speeds of over 35 miles an hour, no matter when or where, you are risking your life. It isn't worth it and I've seen a lot of people go down on them crotch rockets. Another friend of mine is permanantly mentally handicapped from a bike accident back in 1999. My cousin almost lost his hand when he went down on his. I'm telling you its just a matter of time before you go down. The more you ride, the worse the odds get. Ands its not even the mistakes you make but other people on the road. How many times in your car alone do you have to jam your breaks because of the assholes around you? Doing on a bike where your open air with no protection, if someone in a car makes a mistake it will cost your life, not theres. Good luck and be safe.

Actually, my Harley is the first street bike I've ever had. My brother and I grew up riding dirt bikes. I started riding them when I was 12, he was 10. I don't have one now, but he has a CR125, and is very much into riding it. He's also a chopper lover... wants a West Coast as soon as he can afford it.

He also has one of those little Honda CRF50's. Those little things are fun as heck. I can't ride it though because I'm too big and heavy for it. I bottom out the rear shock if I hit the smallest bump. It's awesome... no clutch, you just shift to first and go. It's a 3 speed, and it actually sits there IN GEAR and won't go til you give it gas... like an automatic trans.

I understand your viewpoint but the same can be said for anything. Cars, planes, walking on a sidewalk are all much more deadly than motorcycles. Look at the numbers. I refuse to live my life in fear of what might happen if I do this or that. Living a life like that will lead to missing out on what life is all about....LIVING!

just like driving a manual car, you will get a feel for it in no time. nothing to worry about.

love to buy a bike and ride .I dont have a bike either,im a first timer to.Is there any crotch rockets that dont shift from the foot,do they make automatics at all??fuck im not cordinated ill kill myself with a hand clutch and shifter at the foot.Any ideas??

exact same thing. just like if you jump into another manual. you will be a little off shifting for a couple of times and than you will be smooth. same with a bike

the gap is bad!you can see your ass end coming around the hair pins.people come all over the world to ride "the dragon"....did you stay at the cross roads?did you all of the piece of fairings hanging around?i do suggest anyone who can go....go ride the dragon,but be warned it will bite you in the ass if your over zealous.

Thanks Thick, 2 strokes are cheaper for used, at least that's what I have been finding. I don't mind working on motors. If I can afford the 4 stroke I will get it though.

helmet laws are bullshit. Preventing a wreck is the key and you can prevent them much better w/o a helmet robbing you of your sight and hearing.
obviously you stand a better chance of living if you get into an accident with a helmet on. To prevent an accident it is not even close on what is better. I hate helmets

We didn't stay at the cross roads, we were staying at a motorcycle campground in NC. Dont recall the name though. We did stop at the store at the end of the ride and pick up a few "I survived Deal's Gap" shirts. The guy working at the store had some stories of bikes going over the edge,,,,made me feel happy that I kept it on the pavement. I did grind a little metal of both pipes though,,,,those banked corners are awesome!

well my ex brother in law rides a lot and finally swithed to 4 stroke b/c of all the time he spent on the 2 stroke. I rode his 4 stroke and it is awesome. He said it has been maint. free and he wont ever own a 2 stroke again.

as a first bike i loved the honda cbr f2, handled well and out performed many 600s in its class. katana to dam heavy and kind of sluggish, but felt comfortable. being a big guy hate all 600, 750 and 1000 gxsrs just unbearable to ride. For the money u cant beat a zx7, especially if u have some size on u and are a beginner, had a 96 zx7 and loved it. The only reason i sold it was because i got a 99 1300 gxsr busa.
