the world is really turning into a terrible place ..when i was younger, WWII seemed so distant. It seemed that racism was starting to dissipate and that as a whole people had respect and tolerance for other races and religions..but on 9/11 i had gotten a phone call from my gf's friend screaming to turn on the tv right away 'WWIII' is starting she kept yelling. I turned on the TV just to see the second plane hit the second tower and i think it was katie couric broadcasting went completely silent and about 10 seconds later almost broke down in tears..it really hit home..the WTC was less than a 1/2 hour drive from me and i swear to god i have never been that scared in my entire life..i was waiting for them to say that there was a nuclear detination somewhere in the US or that bombs were being dropped in my area...no one at that point knew what was gonna happen next..and at that point they were reporting that there were a few more planes in the air with their transponders turned off except for the one plane flying over PA which was headed back east somewhere..my neighbors were coming out of their apartments ..most in tears and frightened like little children not knowing where to turn or what to do
i was really worried about my father as he used to business in the WTC complex from time to time and i couldnt get a hold on him because all phone lines were down..me and my gf sat glued to the radio on her couch....after it was known what had happened lots of reports stated that blood was desperately needed for the victims..so wednesday 9/12 we went to a makeshift bloodbank trailer which had been set up within a few hours down the road (which was packed by the way)...a lot of people there had known someone who was killed or in the building or complex when it happened..one woman we met was in greenwich village ( a few blocks away) the day before..people were crying and hugging each other (for NYers that is a rare occurence lol) ...on the drive back to her apartment ..american flags were seen everywhere on cars and houses and store windows
a few nights later i think thursday they had some benefit concert on all the cable networks to try and raise money for the victims...me and my gf were invited into the courtyard of her apartment complex where everyone was gathered..they had a tent set up ..with a barbecue and someone had brought out a tv with an extention cord for everyone to watch...and there we were..about 30 of us ..most of whom ive never spoken to until that night ..bruce springsteen got on stage and played and a beautiful silence came over everyone..and i remember looking around and seeing all these strangers with broken smiles and tears in their eyes holding hands and hugging each other...and i can honestly say that was one of the best moments ive ever experienced...at that moment i was never prouder to be a NYer and most importantly..I WAS NEVER PROUDER TO BE AN AMERICAN
sorry ..i got a little emotional after watching that tape
