Need to strengthen lower back/core!!!

What are the best exercises to workout the core? Besides DL's and Squats. I had another scare today when I went to do DL's, felt a 'pop' but thankfully it turned out to be nothing. Stopped regardless for fear of possibly injuring myself for the 4th time. I did back extensions for the first time today (I do the 5x5) and am going to incorporate them in, replacing one of the ab days (likely the Wed.). Do you think I should try to incorporate side bends to help build my core a bit? Maybe rack pulls starting with the bar just below knee level? Anything is helpful! I really don't want to be out of commission for any longer.
