new workout advice?

i'm basically looking to see what you guys think what kind of training, etc. i should do from now on.

see, i just got back from a week-long business trip (no exercise) after doing one month of 5x5. the 5x5 workout was excellent. made good strength gains but with one downer- my knees started to become sore, and still are, to a point- i think due to squats.

now i want to start back up again after the week layover. i have some prohormones laying around (why not real gear? --long story.) and i thought i might do some HST or some other workout purely to gain mass.

why not just do it? because of my ever-increasing gut. ever since i got this desk job it still keeps growing. clen, occasional cardio, and cutting down on rice and beer did absolutely nothing. so i am thinking maybe i should just cut down diet even more, even perhaps quit beer in the short term (very difficult) and do cardio/ab work every day. problem with this is the fear of losing muscle mass.

the temptation to just go in and blast out weights is high, i'm sure everyone knows this. but this damn gut has to go. i'm also thinking of trying D*P. what would be ideal is to just go to the gym and bust out weight training as usual and lose gut fat at the same time but hey let's be realistic.

any bros who wanna drop some knowledge- it's appreciated.

It's all in the diet bro. We are what we eat/drink. Quitting beer is easier than you think, you just have to get away from that environment. I know exactly where you are coming from because I was there before. I just posted some pics in the member pics area. Giving up the junk was well worth it. just look in the mirror everyday and ask yourself, "would you screw you"? Worked for me.

If you're knees are sore from squats, it's most likely due to poor form. I'd bet a large chunk of money that you squat nowhere near parallel, let alone a proper depth, and, most importantly, that you let your knees go past your toes when you do the movement.

it's kinda hard to keep good form 100% especially during the last couple of sets of 5 with heavy weight. another thing to watch is that you don't forcefully lock your knees at the conclusion of the rep. stop just an inch, or so, short of lockout.

You don't have to have 100%, but there's no reason, absolutely not one fucking reason, that your knees should ever go over your toes. You begin the movement with your ass by sitting BACKWARDS. How in the fuck does sissy squatting forward even remotely approximate the movement of a squat?

Actually, that might be the problem. Helpful hint: The squat does not begin by bending the knees. It begins with the ass.

pretty basic but i guess some do overlook it. personally, it would be too weird and too uncomfortable if i tried to squat by bending the knees. that little voice inside my head would be saying 'no, no!' to that just as the voice says, 'keep a little bend in the knees' when i;m about to lift a heavy object off the floor.

but yes, as you say, begin the movement as if you're about to sit down into the chair. nothing weird about it; we've been doing this all our lives. :D
