No Exaggeration 1005 LB. Bench press

holy shit. did he jump straight from 965 another clip showed him doing only a little while back? i guess when you bench that heavy 40lbs is not much...

Thanks for the video, macattack. It played fine for me. Pretty impressive. I really appreciate powerlifting, but it takes a lot more effort and sacrifice to be a bodybuilder. Just my opinion.

Im neither, but I would tend to disagree entirely. Sure, dieting for a show might be difficult for 12 weeks or so. Dieting sucks, IMO. But continually subjecting your body to loads in excess of 90%+ of your 1RM is very taxing. Doing that on multiple movements over a week or two period adds up. BBing training as Ive seen most do it (pump and fluff) is difficult only in that working through lactic acid build-up sucks.

I'll be interested to hear from guys like MaxRep (who has competed as a BBer) and AnimalMass (who regularly competes in PL).

Shirts versus "Raw"

For those that know, what are the rules/regs regarding shirts? And what are the PR differences for given lifters at elite level for shirt versus raw?

I definitely think both are challenging endeavors worthy of respect. To ask which is more difficult isn't a fair question IMO.

I can easily see people "bodybuild" for decades. But to see people handle such loads for decades at a low rep range (powerlifting) for the same amount of time seems almost impossible for the body to handle. The mind may be willing but the body isn't.

OTOH, the 24/7 O-C nature of bodybuilding is difficult but moreso on the mind than the body.

These are but a couple of the many, many ways to look at this question.

most people avoid powerlifting movements because they are too challenging for them to deal with, whether they admit that's the reason or not. that, to me, says alot. please take no personal offence, i'm mostly referring to what i've seen with people in person.

Well, there are about six million different organizations these days and everyone of them has a different set of rules. The main ones though, are the USAPL: Single ply polyester, no split collar or open back, drug tested. APF/WPO: Double ply poly or denim, open collar and/or back, not tested.
WABDL: Double poly or denim, no split collar or open back, supposedly drug tested, but everyone knows better.
As far as the PR differences for the elite lifters, hehehe. That's the dirty little secret. The guy who did the 1005 is reportedly unable to do much more than 600 raw. Some of these guys practically live in their shirts and will call you all sorts of nasty things if you suggest they stop hiding behind the shirt. 200 to 300 pounds from a shirt is not uncommon for the top guys. I ditched mine two years ago and couldn't be happier. (not that I was a "top guy") I prefer to do my own lifting and not let a piece of cloth do it for me.

Well MisterFurious,

Now you see the dilemma that us competitive powerlifters have. I absolutely HATE the shirt issue, and would rather everyone lift raw or in the single ply of old, but I'm not sure that will ever happen. All the big boys lift in the APF/WPO so that's where I'm gonna lift.

Hopefully one day this will all get better.

Matt

ps - As much as I hate the shirt issue, I'm still one of the best I've ever known in them. Not really trying to brag, as I'm not all that strong, but I'm pretty f'n good in the shirt. However, I would rather lose my rankings in powerlifting for the good of the sport - which in my opinion would be to ditch the heavy gear.

Yeah, I'm with you Matt. I wish the gear would get ditched but I'm a realist. It's here to stay, just not sure where it's going to stop. I stopped using it when I realized I wasn't going to win a national championship, gear or not. Hey, if your going WPO, gear up. Keiran isn't going to give anybody money because they were raw! Good luck, hope you hit a big total.

If he hits 600 without a shirt, how much do you think he weighs? That guy might be 400lb as fat as he is, so 1.5x BW bench is not that great. Thats like a 200lb'er bragging about benching 300.

For those of you who are still not impressed, please do this:

1.) Go to the gym.
2.) Put 1000 pounds on the barbell.
3.) Look at it.
4.) Imagine laying on the bench, having that lift off for you, and then holding that in your hands.
5.) Then imagine benching it, shirt or no shirt.
6.) Get a good understanding of how much stronger Gene is than you.
7.) Unload the bar, and rethink your criticisms.

I honestly believe that if you're not impressed with it, you've never seen what ~1000 pounds looks like on a barbell.

I've personally seen Tony Saunders unrack ~1000 pounds, step back with it, and squat it VERY deep while I sat 10 feet away.

I cannot even phathom what it takes to bench that, with ANY shirt.

I think reading this stuff on the computer, hell even seeing it on video, doesn't do it ANY justice. When you watch these insane feats of strength in person, you have a lot more respect for whats happening.

Just my humble opinion on that matter.
