Fucking pisses me off. If I'm conducting a meeting at work, and I catch one of those candy asses fucking around with their phone while I'm at the podium going over important shit, I'll straight up lose my cool. It doesn't happen that much anymore, either they've learned and know better, or they are hiding it better than they used to and I'm getting old and blind, but I used to throw people out on a weekly basis.

My first Monday on the job was like 2 months out of the Corps, and had to do a safety meeting. I threw 5 people out after a pretty bad, 10 minute ass chewing in front of 200 people for that disrespectful shit. I found out later one of them was the kid of someone WAY up the ladder, and he called Daddy and complained, and his dad chewed him out worse than I did hahaha fuck kids!

I get passing the time during a down period, but for fuck's sake, if someone is addressing you, put the gotdam phone down and pay attention, especially when the criteria could literally save your life. Facebook can wait for 15 fucking minutes...

About the kid who called his dad.... GOOD.

Younger parents seem to baby their kids and tell them it's ok. No one around my age gives their kids a stern talking to.

But uh Facebook? And that is...? Just kidding. Don't have it either!

You don't put a price on safety, and everyone should be tuned to the speaker conducting the meeting. Also the younger generation feels so entitled...pfft I would have taken the damn phone away from that youngster if I was running that meeting.

I used to have to do a monthly 'toolbox talk' at my company, which is just basic safety stuff, and it is amazing how many people's eyes are facing down when you're up there talking. Some of this safety info is truly important.

You want to fuck with them a little? Throw a pop quiz at the end of one of them. They'll pay attention for at least 2 more classes.

I just lost my shit and went full blown asshole on the entire auditorium. Eyes bugging out and face was purple when I was finished, but I had asked politely twice in the previous 10 minutes to put away the personal devices. We'd just had a 22 year old kid burn to death like 6 days before this meeting so I was pretty fucking livid. I asked what was "so motherfucking important that it can't wait 15 goddamn minutes of listening to important shit that will save your worthless fucking life, coming from someone appointed to tell you this because they've been there and seen people hurt?" The idiot closest to the front said he was sorry and I made him tell us what he was doing, and he finally said facebook. I lost it and yelled get the fuck out until all 5 were gone. Then got a round of applause lol.

Nobody said shit about the language, and I haven't seen a single phone in the last 20 straight meetings lol.

This kid's dad is like my entire region's director of ops, so even my higher ups are afraid of him. He apparently has a no bullshit attitude and told his kid to fuck off with the whining and do his job lol there is a God!

It made it worse because of the recent death on the job, and I really didn't know how to be a civilian yet, so I went apeshit. Everyone has the "it will never happen to me" mindset until they get fucked up then act surprised they got hurt by doing dumb shit.

Social media aside, people's listening skills are absolutely atrocious now. I guess so many people have gotten used to communicating via their phone, that they are incapable of paying attention to another human being speak! Next time you are in a work meeting, take a look around and see how many mother fuckers are looking at ANYTHING except the person speaking! They'll be looking at their phones, tablets, the ceiling, the floor, their finger nails - anything except the person speaking.

The easiest way I have found to deal with people not paying attention when I am speaking to a small group, is to stop speaking, mid sentence, and just stare at the person until they realize I have stopped speaking and they look up at me - at which point I will ask "you with us, you understanding everything? I wouldn't be up here talking if you didn't need to know this." That usually embarrasses them enough that they start paying attention.
