Ya ever be out and about and run into old friends you havent seen in 20-25 yrs? I did just that awhile ago. Cool dude, had his struggles like we all did. But man, I dont know. I mean, he wasnt a go getter. You could go to the same bar once every year and he'd be sitting in the same bar stool as last year. Today I got the impression he was meth'd out for a bit. His wife was smokin, not anymore. Hes same age I am, 51. Shes 49. I swear they both look 10yrs older than me. Came over, shook hands how you doin dude long time no see, said our goodbyes. Just got to me. We were through some shit, let me tell ya. But glad whatever path he took I didnt end up on. And believe me im still no saint. Makes ya think.

Some people take an unfortunate path in life. He's alive. That's better than alot of people I knew 30-40 yrs ago. I noticed they started dying off in their late 30's and 40's.

You had a better survival strategy. Life is unforgiving. Help where you can.

3/4 of my friends died in their late teens early 20s. Car accidents(drugs/alcohol) and couple suicides. That kind of fucks you up mentally, I distanced myself from most after that. I mean still saw my friends, but .... hard to explain. When we saw each other or hung out it was like we never parted ways, just took off from where we left off. Then it be 3-6 months before we hung out again. That turned into years, many years. I have a very small circle today, mainly family or coworkers.

Youre right though, life is unforgiving. Maybe if all of us put more effort into being closer we all would have ended up better. Just makes me think.

I stopped trying to save people I knew who to be brutally honest were beyond help. I have made living arrangements possible and tried to help with employment with mixed results.

Mental illness and drug addiction require lifetime treatment in most cases. It's just more personal when it's a part of our lives.
