opening amps

absent an amp opener or any other suitable cutting device, how the fuck do i open an amp?? it has been 3 years since i messed with these things and i usually lost 1/4 of my amps to breakage...

Score the neck with a file, put a ball point pen cap on the top and snap. I've never lost a drop this way.

cut the tip of the pen cap off too. That way you can poke out the glass if it gets stuck in the pen cap. Otherwise you'll need a new pen cap next time. Ya know what i mean?

I just use an amp opener, but that's a crafty idea with the pen cap thing.

before i got my amp opener; i just used a steriolized razor blade...just be carefull not to cut yourself...you can get an amp opener for like $5-$6 online

I use

Just run to Home Depot or Lowes, and pick yourself up a small pigtail file, they are about 6 inches long, cost about $2.49 ea. and score the neck by filing it, don't have to file much just score it, never broke an amp, esp. ICN's they are a bitch to open with out an amp opener or a file or something. It's the cheapest and most reliable way to insure you don't break you goods.

You want to score the vial before snapping it so it will come off in one piece rather than crumbling.

I've done it with a towel (cloth) before and was mighty pissed off when i noticed pieces of glass floating around in my test.

I just snap them off with my fingers, have maybe crushed one out of thousands of amps.

Here is what I do. I grab a small rag or towel and wrap the amp in the towel. I grab the amp by the base of the neck and at the top and and slowly apply pressure until I here I slight snap. I do say LIGHT pressure because too much and you can snap and break the whole amp. With light pressure you can break the amp right at the neck and have no problems.

Like some of the other members here stated you can file it off but that can take a few minutes and sometimes be a pain in the ass. Hope this helps.

my new way to open them is to put scotch tape around the top of the amp than smash the taped part. this makes it so all the broken glass stays attached to the tape and your amp is open.

I've never had a problem just snapping them with my bare hands. You just need a soft touch! lol
