PHILIP FENTON, trainer of Last Instalment and Dunguib, is due to appear before Carrick-on-Suir district court on Thursday charged with possession of anabolic steroids.
Fenton has been charged with the possession of a number of prohibited substances, including Nitrotain, which contains the anabolic steroid ethylestranol, and Ilium Stanabolic, which contains stanozolol.
The charges arise from a Department of Agriculture raid on his yard over two years ago, on January 18, 2012. Fenton is also charged with possession of a number of antibiotics without veterinary prescriptions, namely Engemycin, Neomycin Penicillin, Betamoz LA and Marbocyl.
When contacted by the Racing Post on Monday night Fenton would only say: "I have no comment to make on this."
A spokesman for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine confirmed that a hearing is scheduled for Carrick-on-Suir district court on Thursday, February 20.
"Charges are being brought under the Animal Remedies legislation alleging offences relating to possession of animal remedies," the spokesman said.
Outlining the potential penalties if found guilty of the offences, he added: "A person who commits one of the offences above is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €5,000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding six months or to both."
The Turf Club chief executive Denis Egan said that the regulatory authority would be "paying close attention to what happens" in the case.
