Phone recommendations

it’s about time to get another phone. I’ve always had an iPhone, but curious to what everyone uses that doesn’t use Apple.

Things you like, things you don’t like. If you’ve used both an iPhone and another brand, what were some advantages of one over the other?

I'm a Android guy...but there's a huge difference in Androids .

There are Androids, like the ones from Samsung, motorola, LG...who ever. And then there pure Android . First was the Nexus , and now the pixel line .

The pixel devices are pure Android . No bullshit laid across the top . No Samsung or LG UI layered over Android. That makes a huge difference.

What apple people don't get is that Android is open sourced. Meaning Google releases the factory images of whatever Android version, were at 9 and all the phone makers and developers grab and tweak it. Apple isn't open source. They don't want you to have root access or the actual program.

For years I used rooted over clocked devices on Android versions that weren't available to the public. The ability of the end user to tweak the phone is mind boggling. Any and every thing you can imagine is on a website, for free as a apk file. You download it , and boom...it's there. Right now I'm running the full dark version that's not released yet, in a OTA, but the apks are available .

The other people in my house are all iPhone people . They constantly have issues . There batteries dont last . Or there's just something, like apple writing code to kill the old phones . Apple is bullshit. Hell I e got a old ass Nexus phone in my drawer that still works fine. It's updated to Android 9, phones probably 7-8 years old... Processor is behind the times but it works fine.

iPhone for me android seems very complex with very much setting and things we don’t need. I think iPhones are simple way more simple than androids and also have less setting the things you need only so you don’t get “lost”

You can still get a Samsung S4 for under $70 that does just fine with maps, internet Pandora, etc. An S5 isn't much more. I've used lots of different phones, written software for them, repaired them for friends. I've seen nothing at all in any of the newer phones that justifies the cost, unless you absolutely need higher CPU speeds for some special game or app. I have a PC for that.

I do a lot from my phone. I trade stock options and futures, do 100% of all shopping, all my charting, my work email goes through my phone, video and pictures, video game emulators and roms... @flenser has a PC for it, but my phone is my PC. I have a Samsung note 9. Before that I had the note 8. There is nothing a piece of shit iphone is even close to on a galaxy or note... pictures, screen, video, os, and as previously stated if you want to change anything or add anything to an iphone you have to dig up Steve jobs and jam a dollar up his ass with your tongue. I had apple everything until 2008 and realized what it was turning into- where it used to be superior hardware that was compatible with almost nothing but you could do whatever you want to it... it is now dogshit hardware in a shiny case being sold at a 10 times mark up that lives to protect digital copyright bullshit. Fuck apple. The sad part is that most people March around with apple stuff now and regurgitate the old dialogue about how it's better for video or audio editing (which they do not do) and that isn't true anymore. It wasnt really even true back then- fucking Adobe took a year for apple versions to new software.

The only innovation at apple died with jobs. Tim cook is a stock price managed margin monster who will keep repackaging the same garbage and charging retards more for it until the cows come home.

I'm also a fan of the Galaxy Note. I had the Note 7 and would've kept it, but they forced a trade in after the whole potential battery catching on fire thing. Got the S7 Edge and waited for the Note 8 to come out and had it on preorder when it came out last year. If they offered some great deal on a Note 9 I'd upgrade now, if not I'll keep my Note 8 until the Note 10 comes out. I don't have a PC, laptop, or tablet, so this phone does all I need.

I just got a current gen ipad 10" for 200 bucks black Friday just for porn. I figure apple hatred was not trumped by my need for porn on a big screen... and I was right.

iPhone pros: consistent quality, less malware, crash less because Apple makes the hardware and software.

Cons: price, limited customization, no expandable storage (micro sad card), not as many apps as android.

Android has some pros and cons too...

I use iPhone (purchased outright) on the Sprint free plan so my bill is super cheap, like $4 a month. Buying a phone and getting on the free year from Sprint or going prepaid is the way to go IMO.

I have literally never once had a samsung crash... and I have to hard reset my mothers iphone all the time when that bitch freezes. I am always amazed at these claims from iphone users.

Definitely agree with you on the iPhone. The last one I worked on was held together with screws. In today's plastic snap together world, that's like finding tubes in the back. It had other design issues with poorly designed plugs and long ribbon cable routs glued down to multiple components. It was a joke compared to my older S4.

Never had a phone that could handle the things I do on my desktop. Not sure I would want to with my shitty eyesight, but I know a lot of people use the things for more complex tasks than email, maps and internet. The thing is, most people can do everything they want with the phone they already have. They just want a new one, because it's new.

I've got a galaxy s8 plus. love it. but it's the last new latest and greatest phone. can get a phone 2 generations older incredibly cheap, and not have to make payments for 2 years

Combine that with a cheap carrier like Tello, Mint Sim, Red Pocket, or even the “free” Sprint plan and then you will have cheap service with the cheap hardware and double win.

If people start saving money like that we might have to move this over to the Men’s Economics section, lol!

Pixel 2 xl for me,and my girl just switched from iPhone to the pixel 3 xl.

Android with no bloatware is not the same as Android on other devices.

I've had Google phones since the Nexus 4. They have all outlasted the time I'd expect them to, and I've never had viruses or malware.

Unless you download stupid shit apps , it's never gonna be an issue. The new pixels have a chip dedicated to security, and all Google branded phones get MONTHLY security updates. I'd say they are every bit as secure, simple to operate, and more affordable than iPhones. Even if appearance is something you care about, every phone needs a case these days. No one knows or cares what phone you use unless you hand it to them, and in my experience, modern Android is far greater than modern iPhone, in most regards.
