Plant based diet?

There are several compelling reasons for eating vegan with the least being the nutrition/health benefits...

Eat Less Red Meat, Scientists Said. Now Some Believe That Was Bad Advice.
The evidence is too weak to justify telling individuals to eat less beef and pork, according to new research. The findings “erode public trust,” critics said.

Public health officials for years have urged Americans to limit consumption of red meat and processed meats because of concerns that these foods are linked to heart disease, cancer and other ills.

But on Monday, in a remarkable turnabout, an international collaboration of researchers produced a series of analyses concluding that the advice, a bedrock of almost all dietary guidelines, is not backed by good scientific evidence.

If there are health benefits from eating less beef and pork, they are small, the researchers concluded. Indeed, the advantages are so faint that they can be discerned only when looking at large populations, the scientists said, and are not sufficient to tell individuals to change their meat-eating habits.

“The certainty of evidence for these risk reductions was low to very low,” said Bradley Johnston, an epidemiologist at Dalhousie University in Canada and leader of the group publishing the new research in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Btw, Its wayyy more common to see meat eating super athletes than vegan. Who do you think youre fooling with that statement? Youre being dishonest to yourself and others. And no, fish is great, but all the meat doom and gloom gets old. Seriously, meat is not sitting in every meateaters colon other than during digestion. Oh no, I need a coffee colonic to get this damn beef out of my ass! No, you just have an anal fixation and this is your chance to explore it!
Obviously I don't mean you.
I understand plenty about eating everything brother. I ate meat for 32 years, just because I don’t eat now doesn’t make me any less an authority in eating meat, as someone that currently eats meat. Lol that doesn’t make any sense! The difference is I know what its like to not eat any meat, being Vegetarian for 5 years.

I might not have been vegan but I know how my digestive system reacted to not eating meat and it was all positive! To this day even though I’m a pescatarian, I sometimes go days or weeks without eating seafood. I feel much better and I’m in the best shape of my life in my 40’s. Also your example of food, mashed potatoes and stuffing was a weird example and I disagree that eating meat is healthier then eating lots, lentils, beans, avocado, quinoa, kale, apples, sweet potatoes, brown rice, bananas, eggs and nut butters.

I never said there were more non meat eating super athletes. I think your were reading too fast. I said it’s not uncommon to see that now a day’s. I am not sure why meat eaters always attack stories and documentaries like this. I have lived both sides, which only makes me more educated and knowledgeable about nutrition. Meat eaters that have never lived the other lifestyle are only playing themselves when they bad mouth it. None of this is directed at you. It’s just my personal point of view.

Why did you stop eating meat out of curiosity? What was your personal reasoning behind this decision? I eat meat and wife is a vegetarian.

Believe it or not I used to be a butcher. It eventually became repulsive and I wanted to live a more cognizant life.I studied and took classes on Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, meditation and yoga. It changed me in a positive way and helped me distance myself from a life of addiction and depression. It’s a lifestyle not just a diet.

I incorporate plant based shakes for dieting, but I’m not bodybuilding. I have a lot of GI problems with meat, especially hit meat ,cold it tests my GI fine . I have no GI issues with the plant based shakes.

I understand this as I was a butcher for about a decade . I do not agree with how commercial meat is raised Mostly the effects of the diet we use to bulk cows. The kill floors are pretty nasty too! Any change that takes work and improves you quality of life is a good one.

No, I have no problem with not eating meat. Fish is just fine. I just hate that colon blocked up with old meat line they spew. That's the extent of my argument. I could survive on fish too. I just don't enjoy very many types of fish. Shit, who knows, maybe I'd even try it out. Wasn't a dig at you.

I understand where your coming from man. Maybe for me I’ve noticed such a profound difference in digestive health not only from giving up meat but also going vegetarian at the same time.
That was ten years ago.

The last five years I’ve been in pescatarian. Just reiterate I “survive” on a vegetarian diet. I occasionally eat seafood not just for the protein or health benefits. I just really enjoy the way it taste! In reality I just supplement with with seafood. The foods I mentioned before are just some of my staples.

Lol, this study was funded by the meat industry. Surprise!!:oops::eek:

The study in the well-respected Annals of Internal Medicine rocked the nutrition world by suggesting the negative health effects of red and processed meat had been overstated. The international group of researchers, headed by Bradley C. Johnston, an epidemiologist at Dalhousie University in Canada, concluded that warnings linking meat consumption to heart disease and cancer are not backed by good scientific evidence. The group, which calls itself NutriRECS, recommended meat eaters continue their current levels of consumption.

Keep eating your ‘current’ level of red meat? A dietitian weighs in on that disputed study.

But undisclosed in the study was that NutriRECS, a consortium of about 20 researchers, has also formed a partnership with an arm of Texas A&M University partially funded by the beef industry. The omission is the latest twist in an ongoing debate about how much researchers ought to disclose to the public about potential conflicts of interest.

This doesn’t even get into the environmental impact and devastation it has and will continue to cause.

Mass factory farming is hard on the environment whether animal or vegetable. I do not want to see animals treated poorly either. "Everything in moderation." Truer words have never been spoken in my experience.

The only reason a Texan would suggest vegetarianism is so they could have more meat to themselves:p

As far as the responses to GI issues and overall well being it's very unique to indiividuals as always. For a complete polar opposite ead how the carnivore diet (which is all meat and fat) has changed lives for the better as well. Just as many note GI issues gone as well as alleviation from numerous other issues including depression/anxiety.

That “documentary” is more entertainment than factual. So flawed.

BTW there’s a reason you don’t see guys at the top of their field or guys ascending using plant based diets. It MIGHT work to maintain, but nobody’s getting huge, immensely strong, or fucking peeled on vegan diets. And trying to tell athletes it’s a superior path is at best poorly advised and at worst a giant publicity stunt aimed at revenue at the expense of those willing to listen.

If your diet requires massive supplementation it’s probably not all that’s sound. But using a few plant based sources is definitely not a bad move.

if you have a moral objection to eating meat I get it and support it. But that documentary’s “facts” aren’t facts.

Things are definitely changing as more options hit the mainstream. Justin Mihaley and a lot of his team are vegan.
