Powerlifting with a Legend

Yeah ive seen him on Goggins IG before. dude is a monster for his weight and age!
Yes he is man. He was telling me how practices his sumo set up. He says he stand against a wall in his sumo stance and keeps his arms up as if he was starting his setup. Then and keeps his chest on the wall and starts sinking down into his set up.

He said this is helps him to reinforce chest up for sumo.

Today was bench day touch n go. He asked what was my 1 rep max I said I hit 375 1x3 2-3 months ago. So he pushed me to the limit today.

Lesson learned today:

  1. I need to get tighter
  2. Bar path tends to drift towards my feet
  3. Work on conditioning/endurance
Bench Touch n Go:
Worked me up to 385 said I had more in me got me up to 390 failed. He said it was my technique. I let the bar drift away instead of pressing up and back. He feels I'll be past 425 by my next meet.

Back off sets:
295 2x5
275 2x8

He didn't really want me to do any more but he saw it in my eyes I wanted more so he backed me down to 275.

EZ Bar tricep push down:
100 4x20

Tricep rope push down:
45 4x20 these two were supersets

Seated one arm dumbbell press:
45 4x20

Training schedule has been changed just a bit. Training will be on:

Tuesday: Bench
Thursday: Deadlift
Saturday: Squats/ This block was on Sundays.

This week is heavy week I used hook grip for the first time and loved it. I was able to go up to 385 1x5. Goggins told me to stop there and every week we will increase my hook grip pull by 5 kilos or pounds. I don't bother to convert so I don't know what I'm lifting to after training when he tells me. I will say we do a lot of warmups.

Deadlift:

  1. 441 4x3
  2. 506 3x3
Trap Bar Bent rows 2 45's each side:
3x10

Trap Bar shrugs same 2 45's each side:
3x20

GHR:
3x15

Prone Leg Curls:
125 3x10

Lat Pull Down:
145 3x12

Hook grip I'm loving hit. Especially since I'm still nursing some left bicep tendonitis. Noting serious.

I've been preaching hook since before it was cool glad another one has converted to the great ways.

Had to out of necessity, to keep from getting hurt. And he fixed my forward lean that sent you and few others a vid of me pulling.

The cues that helped. You forced me to drag the bar up my legs pull shoulders back and as I'm nearing lockout look up.

Looking up helped get my last two reps at 506.

This was from the other day. 375 then we added the comp collars which total 10 pounds. The camera person didn't get the 385 lift. I failed at 390 due to allowing the bar to drift forward.

Hookgrip is a must IMO. Definitely can minimize injury to your biceps. And it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was told by coach to stop at 385. I was going to attempt hook grip on all the heavier lifts. But he said one week at a time we will increase continue the hook grip one set heavier each week or each heavy week. So next week is light week. I'll be hooking and ripping the whole session or at least attempting to.

Yeah i finally came around when icky, atleast i think it was @Ickyrica tore his shit a couple weeks back. I would rather have sore thumbs than have that shit happen to my bicep.

Made my decision then and there

Honestly I believe that was when I decided to say fuck it and I'd rather have some temporary pain in my thumbs then having to sit out a few months rehabbing. Honestly didn't hurt yet anyway. Lets see once I get up in weight. LOL!!! I believe most feds allow you to tape your thumbs if you are using hook grip. But I feel it would just make it harder to really lock that thumb in with any extra material. So fuck thumbs need to toughen up fast. LOL!!!
