Pull Ups

I am wondering if there is any better way to add to the amount of pullups you can do except for doing an assload of them everyday. I would like to get up around the 20-25 range but I was blessed with my skinny-ass dad's genetics and upper-body strength isnt as high as I would like. Any suggestions....? Thanks

Also, is it better do do them palms facing in or out?

It depends on your goal of the pull ups. If sheer number is your concern, then I'd say palms facing you is best because you can recruit more bicep to aid in the pulling. Palm away would be better for back development.

The quickest way to increase your pull up numbers is to lose weight. LOL And, I am being serious, partially anyhow.

i'm with Grizz on this one...I've noticed the heavy/stronger I get the harder it is to do pull-ups. Def. do palms facing away...very good for back development. You can tinker with behind the neck pull-ups or pull-ups in front.

Why 4 sets of 5? How is that going to increase max number of reps? Why not 2 sets of 10 or 3 sets of 7 or 1 set of 20? How about 20 sets of 1? 10 sets of 2? 5 sets of 4? Is 4 sets of 5 the magical number, because I seriously doubt that.

No, why should I be so placating? I can say for a fact that 4 sets of 5 is in no way, shape or form the magical number and, as such, should not just be thrown out there, particularly when it has absolutely no bearing on the goal in question.

Sheer numbers is my main concern. I notice I can do more when palms are facing in, but I also notice that palms facing away gives me a better workout. But yes, quanitity is my concern here.

Now you say there is no magical number of reps/set.......Do you think 3-5 sets to failure in the morning and at night would help out at all?

Thanks for the replies

Sorry, I meant 5 set of 4.

I would tend to think that stopping short of failure would be your best bet, particularly if you are going to do it 2X/day.

My gym has an assisted pull up machine that I like. Im about the only dude that uses it but it has def helped my lats spread out like barn doors. You may look like a goof doin it but I'd rather be a goof with big lats then one of those skinny fucks passing judgement.

I always liked doing a pyramid for pull-ups,1,2,3...10,9...2,1 and got pretty good results. Palms facing away with thumbs over the bar is the best way to max out on reps, it takes a little getting used to but it will help out in the long run. Another pull-up workout I like is sets of 20,15,15,10,5 and then start your back workout. Be sure to touch your chest to the bar, fast up, slow on the way down. I went from 22 deadhangs to 35. Have fun.

i wouldn't do them every day if you're also doing a separate back workout because you would definitely be dancing with overtraining. i'd do them eod and only once a day, morning OR night. you're looking to build up numbers not kill yourself or build per se.

losing weight will get your reps up but why lose weight if you don't need to lose weight? what happens if you need to gain weight? it's not always a viable option. the dip/pullup assist machine sucks. how can it be better doing reps with less than your bodyweight vs. your bodyweight? how one can argue for its use is beyond me but to each his own, i suppose...

i think what works well, for me anyway, is to do 2-3 sets of 8 reps. add weight around your waist every week and to attempt to do one more rep with every workout. this may not always be possible but at least try. every 3 weeks, or so, do a 'test' set with no weight to failure. try to do as many reps as you possibly can. each time you do this 'test', you should try to do more reps than the previous 'test'. it will take a few months but you can definitely up your reps significantly using this method.

That was some good advice, Chip. I've been doing 2 sets of chins 2X/wk and it seems to be doing alright. I always try to get 1 more rep on, at least, the first set each time. I was trying to get 5 and 5 or 6 and 6 or 3 and 3, whatever, before moving up to another rep count, but that wasn't working all that well so I just moved to as many as I could the first and then just attempting to duplicate the number the second time. Last night I did 9 and 7. I supposed that's not all that bad for 275lbs.

ldd

You need to reach a certain number to pass a physicaexam
for the military rright?Your best bet is to listen to Chip and start
adding weight.ive used this method myself. When you go back to
just bodyweight itll be so much lighter and easier for you.If
your gym doesnt have a belt just hold a dumbell betwwen your thighs.
Use weight for a few sets then use bodyweight for one all out burnout set.
Eventually youll be able to pull your body easy.

grizz, 9 and 7 reps at 275lbs is a feat my friend. especially when you consider how your average male can't even do a couple of them with 100lbs less bodyweight. and i agree, the 2 sets may even be better 3 because you'll get your workout without killing yourself. hey, those sets of pullups have a way of adding up and kicking your ass by the week's end. btw, i can now do 15 pullups at a bodyweight of 215lbs. this is up from 11 pullups a few short months ago.

Not a bad job, chip. Not bad at all. If you keep at it you can post a pic again and Phreezer won't bust your balls. LOL

Re: the chin/dip belt...you can always just make your own. I'd imagine that you own a weight lifting belt. Go get a few feet of chain and an "S" hook. Put one end of the hook into the buckle of the belt and load the chain and weight onto the other end. Instand chin/dip belt.

are you kidding me grizz? phreezer's like 280+ fucking lbs. i can hit 250lbs (i probably never will....) and he'll still break my balls.... lol.... i will be posting some pics in a couple of weeks though. i think it keeps you on your toes when you know you'll be posting pics every few months. it helps you stay on top of your game.

ok airborne, I assume you need 20-25 for your military coming up.

Does the military allow u to choose b/n pullups(palms away) and Chinups(palms towards you is how i classify the two)?

I would not do 2x/day. I would do every 2-3 days doing pyramids up and setting a peak for when you will be in basic training

I would work in the 10-15 rep range. Start at body weight and maybe do 3-4 sets of 10 reps. Add reps until you get 3 sets of 15 reps. Than get a dip belt and add 5 pounds or whatever and go back to 3- 4 sets of 10 reps with the dip belt. Increase until you can do 15 reps. Something on those lines should get the mix of strength and endurance that you need. I would not take a long rest in b/n sets either.
Also, some of this depends on your time frame. Do you have 2 months or 6 months etc. That will have some bearing on what you should do also. Sorry if this was already advise but when Chip and grizzly started making out I had to skip down and post

lmao sorry it is that time of the month and the love mildewing b/n u and grizz was just too much
