Running....a sin in bodybuilding?

I have been told I have to pick one...Running or bodybuilding.

This makes me sad

Nicole wilkins said she runs 4 miles in the mornings ......:)

Any other bodybuilder runners????

Although I'm not in the shape I once was when I was a triathlete I still do a Saturday morning run with my pooch. The main problem with running is it screws up recovery. If you want to run and actually enjoy it I suggest doing it after your workouts but make sure to account for how many calories you burn in order to refuel that to gain muscle. Or you could do a 4 day split where day 1 is a jog the other 3 are your typical BB style splits then day off and repeat

Running is just cardio, as long as you're replacing the calories with a surplus then you will continue to grow regardless of running.

In fact running will probably help with leg development.

Do what you want to do!

You can. Its just about knowing your goals and getting your cals straight. Before I got into Pling and I was only worried about looks I ran 10-15 miles a week. It was the only cardio I did, but it worked.

I do power-walks (fast walking) w/ bits of running thrown in . Usually thru the woods , up & down hills & trails just like our ancestors did for hunting/survival . I also mountain bike and credit both for my strong legs/calves . Just do it ! But dont go overboard....

Good info and suggestions!
I got so focused on fat burning and macro dieting with contest prep...blah blah blah blah blah...:rolleyes:
I lost a lot of muscle because of my running habits...my coach was totally out of the game on this one and when it became an issue (was too late) they just told me to quit running........:mad:

Running keeps me sane....quitting is NOT an option!

@Nutpuncher don't worry I won't hate on your speedos
@Oregongearhead That sounds FUN!! :D

Look at all the running & cardio Arnold & the Golds Gym guys did back in the day pre-contest . Arnold always stressed some running & cardio in his books . No , I dont think you should cut out cardio or light running . I always look more ripped when I do cardio thru my cycles...

the best i looked was 6 months before the picture under my handle. i went from lifting 4-5x a week lifting and moderate training to 5-6 days of pretty much just straight training and liftin 2-3x week. It felt just wrong lol but after the first month i was looking super ripped then after 4-5 months i was just doing calesethics couple times a week. and instead of spendin time doing bis tris traps really just stuck to core n compound excercises so after a lil bit i was still look great but not like a BB as much anymore. If i wasent doing a hour or 75 mins of pretty much cardio a day i would have lifted more but i was training for a fight

Ive got flat arches (from squats?) and I cant run on pavement/concrete without paying for it for days . So I switched to partial running on trails and the woods . The softer ground makes it tolerable and you cant beat cross-country running for fitness . My favorite cardio. Beats boring machines too.

Bet that trail in Alaska was a roughie for you lol

Yes that is correct. ..when I lost my gains my coach had me on 40 gram carbs and total of 1,000 calorie/day diet

Yes, this is exactly why I don't even want to think about competing again. It was devastating to me. 21 weeks of dieting and training my ass off only to end up skinny and washed out.

I was chewing on the fucking barrel by week 18 and blew the whole thing....didn't even go to the comp even though I had paid the fee....I was spent

Switch to powerlifting. All of the excitement of competition, none of the dietary restrictions.

21 weeks is brutal to have to cut. I think if you want to compete get to a physic level where it would only take 10 weeks to cut to compitetion weight/size less time in a deficient so you don't go so mad and you'll be holding more weight as your going into the cut semi-lean. Gotta say props for making 18 weeks I'm week 10 (not for competition purposes) and it's a mental battle now when I open the fridge to look at my prepped meals for the day.
