The best way to get him back is :1) have him believe that you are really upset about his issues-- make something up that he thinks is happening to you-- some scenario that could make him feel bad (cops busting you for something). Or, 2) find a way to scare him so bad that he needs counseling....

Brief explanation of a situation with similarities for you....
Around thanksgiving I was sleeping - heard some clanging outside - got up and looked out window - saw fukers breaking into my car - got my dad's .40 - rushed outside - screamed i have a gun and i've called the cops - (didn't call the cops yet) - they ran - i shot at them when they were about 30 yards away and i couldn't hit shit because i had no contacts in and no glasses on - discharged 6 rounds - anyways only reason i was saved was because one of them dropped a gun - and by the grace of god i didn't hit one of them and no bullets hit any houses - by the grace of god!!!! - no damage done - except $400 poped lock on my car and my pride - i thank god that i didn't kill one of them that night
i later learned that what i did was astronomically serious - had i hit them and had they not had a gun (after neighbors called cops i told cops that the suspects pointed the gun at me) or had some bullets gone into a house ------ bad bad bad news legally - but in my case self defense - didn't even have to go to court because a neighbor saw the thing and told the police my version of what happened
my advice to you --- try to appeal to the kid first since you know him - reason with him - give him incentive - a goal - make him feel like you don't care about his past transgressions against you and you want to work things out with him
if this dosn't work - call the cops - you can replace damaged property with insurance (duductables are a bitch though) but you can't replace a criminal record that you'll have with a clean one if you are involved in an altercation with him and you can't replace the guilt and regret you will have if you harm him - however misguided and niave he may be - have pity for his lost direction - i guess you just have to have patience
It took a great deal of time on my part not to give in to vengence on the fukers that hit my car by saying that if it happend again I would not repeat my actions - I thank God that he strayed my bullets

I've personally watched people get healed out of wheelchairs, and what not, by learning to forgive deeply, all the way from the bottom of their hearts.
I'm not talking out my ass, I've experienced what you are talking about. I've had to live with people for over 6 months, who used and abused me, my food, my house, and my money. I've had people make long distance phone calls and refuse to even let me know they did it so I could plan my bills out. I had someone smash my car up, twice, and I had to pay for it. I lent out a car at a cost to me of $150 a month, that's been gone for 5 months now.
Before you assume I'm being an idiot, consider that there is another world, another dimension to live in, higher than this one, and by living there you get blessed in many ways, much more satisfying than the normal world.
It's not fantasy world. God told me to quit my job at Cray supercomputers, and that same day, without my looking, I got offered, and took, a job that was much easier, and paid 55% more than what I got at Cray.
My relationships, holy shit man, my relationships are incredible...
This isn't church organ stuff, I HATE CHURCH. I never go. This is just one dude telling another that 'this worked for me'.
