Steroid Source for Elite and Olympic Athletes Busted in Spain

Operación Skype originated with professional cyclist David Garcia Dapena of the Xacobeo Galicia team. Garcia tested positive for hydroxyethyl starch at the 2010 Vuelta a España and later for erythropoietin (EPO). Hydroxyethyl starch is used as a blood plasma volume expander to mask elevated hematocrit levels that result from the use of EPO. Garcia snitched on Dr. Alberto Beltran Nino as his source. The Mossos d’Esquadra and the Policia Nacional detained Beltran recently at the Barajas International Airport in Madrid on March 5, 2012. He was found in possession of two PEDs - AICAR and TB-500.
