Steroids Still Stalking Linda McMahon - Politics - The Atlantic

Linda McMahon, the Republican wrestling impresario, has crept to within striking distance of Richard Blumenthal in the Connecticut Senate race. But news that a 29-year-old former WWE wrestler died over the weekend of heart failure is bound to be a setback because it puts a spotlight on an issue--steroids--that's McMahon's Achilles heel. Why is steroids a problem? Because professional wrestling is rife with steroid abuse that has killed, or probably killed, a small army of current and former employees of McMahon's company, WWE. (It's not clear that the wrestler who died, Lance McNaught, had abused steroids...but how many 29-year-olds die of heart failure who haven't?) The problem is serious enough that even Congress has gotten involved.

McMahon has tried hard to avoid talking about the issue, and probably for good reason. A recent and very good Weekly Standard profile of McMahon - http://www.weeklystandard.com/print/articles/wrestlemania-connecticut (WrestleMania in Connecticut) - described some of the carnage--and it's enough to give anyone pause about McMahon's fitness for office:

"[McMahon's] problem is that over the last few decades, professional wrestlers who worked for the WWE have been dropping dead at a terrifying rate... In 2007, WWE star Chris Benoit killed his wife and son before committing suicide. Benoit was 40. (Steroids were found in his house.) Eddie Guerrero, another former WWE champ, was found dead in a hotel room. The cause of death was heart failure. He was 38. Bam Bam Bigelow, Mike Awesome, Crash Holly, Umaga, Yokozuna, Brian Pillman, Davey Boy Smith, Rick Rude, Big Boss Man, Earthquake, Curt Hennig, Hercules, Big John Studd, Road Warrior Hawk, Chris Kanyon, Andrew "Test" Martin--all of these former WWE stars have died in recent years. None was older than 46. This is a partial list.

Keith Pinckard, a medical examiner who tracks pro wrestling deaths, has calculated that wrestlers have a death rate 7 times higher than the general population and are 12 times more likely to die from heart disease than other Americans in the same age groups."

NOW THAT IS FUCKED UP!!.. You really have to wonder. MANY of those names I knew well from TV and had no idea they had died. Flyin Brian too, for pete's sake.....!!!?? One of the road warriors.

Now while I am sure the article does not speak of other drugs like Cocaine (anyone who has seen the NatureBoy talkin trash at 9am on a sunday morning would understand that suspicion) , and the results of their concaminate & concurrent use with juice, It really has me thinking. AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT ALL ROIDS THEY PREFERRED?!?!?

WOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHh!!!!!!

AS IF the sole cause of heart failure among young adults is "steroid abuse"!?!

Certainly, the high death rate among pro wrestlers should raise questions, but I find it troubling that journalists are unquestionably blaming these deaths on steroids at the exclusion of all other probable causes. They are not motivated at finding truthful answers to these questions but creating doubt about and demonizing steroids. Especially, journalists who should be more critical in their reporting such as the author of this piece Joshua Green:

Joshua Green is a senior editor of The Atlantic and a weekly political columnist for the Boston Globe. He has also written for The New Yorker, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Previously, he was an editor at The Washington Monthly.

The logic used is atrocious. Steroid MUST have caused McNaught's death because "how many [young adults who] who die of heart failure... haven't [used steroids]? Steroids MUST have cause Benoit's murder/suicide because steroids "were found in his house".!!

I highly doubt that steroids were the sole, or even a significant factor.....

For sure. These (pro) wrestlers used to pass through the gym when they were in town.
Almost all of them lived a life of absolute excess. Too much coke, pills and lots of strippers.

I allways figured that when one came up dead that he had already lived 2 lifetimes in his 30 or so years.

Sad, but I got a lotta BB bros that live the same way.

Yea, but still you have to recognize the INSANE inherent persona of a person that can make it in pro-wrestling!!! If anyone is living like a rockstar, it is them. I mean Brian Pilsner may not have ever made total fame and glory, and peaked with his run with the 4 horsement (until he freaked and got into with someone in the audience!!![:o)]), BUT HE WAS A NUTBALL!!!

To make it in WWF would take both incredible athletic ability combined with all the lunacy and artistic ability of the craziest fuckers....

WHEN THE HELL DID ALL THESE GUYS DIE!!!

How come no one told me? I'm with you BBC I remember them well!

I guess only steroids cause heart attacks in young folks....

I wonder though... since they found steroids in that guys house when he killed his family and they are blaming it on that... Can the anti gun folks say that all the guns in his house killed them too?

Ahh, a man of the era... Exactly... Life is paralelled well in pro football. YOU CAN CALL HOLDING ON ANY GIVEN PLAY IF YOU ARE LOOKING.... Chris Benoit just happened to satisfy the anti-steroid activists at the time. If you were taking note, you will notice that hydrocodone was involved and they layed off it. It has been hot topic lately as point of many BS litigations. So for whatever reason. Personally I think that they just could not involve all the "targets" their in order to save the legitimacy of the attack. BUT EVEN STILL. The steroid anti-groups were not expecting the CORPORATE RESPONSE in defense. IF you recall, he was said to have been taking testosterone, valium, and hydro. No other steroids were mentioned I dont think. With corporate America getting on the testosterone and TRT bandwagon, they could not very well have anyone attacking it successfully now could they. They even had an independent doc testify that the levels in his body were not outrageously high. ALL the drugs he was taking were medically necessary. He would surely require testosterone after a lifetime of steroid use. The hydrocodone to kill the pain from his career of physical abuse (and HYDRO aint shit for a pain killer I assure you). And valium for the stress in his personal life. Those guys are contractors, and dont make a great living unless worked. He peaked with the horsemen, and was busy, but going down. He had a child with serous medical problems that would make THE STRONGEST MAN get up and wonder is GOD were playing a cruel joke and question whether Hell is here on earth!!! Then can you imagine the shit he got from his bitch wife with the money running low and all??

Chris was a CONSUMATE PROFESSIONAL, and one of the best in that business. His loss was a tragedy of immense proportion. THAT STORY, has happened before, his just got more attention, AND SADLY FOR THE WRONG REASONS.

YES, he went fucking nuts. But anyone with that profile probably has the inherent propensity. Not to mention that the life he led professionally was the worst reinforcer of wild side behavior there could possibly be. People go nuts and that shit happens EVERY DAY Somewhere. While being human is quite of preponderous proposition, OUR SOCIETY IS A PIECE OF SHIT. All clamoring in the streets to see some blood to add a little kick to their sorry little uneventful Jerry Springer Worlds because NO ONE ELSE has the balls to get up off their ass and go for it..... He,and his family were nothing more than VICTIMS of our sorry ass society. Period.

NO ONE HERE can imagine life with a child with that condition, and what it would take to stick it out. They were fucking martyred saints!!! Assholes.....
