stupid dumbell injury...

ok, i always bench with dumbells because then i dont need a spotter and they are easier on my shoulders than a barbell is. but i really strained my back yesterday doing them. i think its when i pick them up off the floor that did it. usually i am sitting on the bench with the dumbells by my feet, i then reach down and pick them up one at a time and rest them on my knee until im ready to go. how else am i supposed to do this so i dont have to bend over to pick them up? ive been doing it like this for abaout 6 years and never had a problem but i definatley dont want to mess my lower back up again because it hurts like a bastard. stupid question i know...
thanks, massive

On the flat bench, i put the dumbells on the end of the bench. then i'll straddle it and pick the dumbells up from there and sit. Place them on my knees, and lean back put them in position with the help of my legs. After each set I'll pick them up from the floor one at a time and place them on the bench again. For inclines or shoulder press I pull them from the floor just like you.

I have the flat bench moved in front of the dumbell rack. When I get ready for a set, I grab the dumbells off the rack, place them on my knees, lean back and use my legs to put them into place. The dumbells never touch the floor and no risk of injuring my back. Just move the flat bench over to the rack if you can, this will solve your problems.

get a work out partner or ask someone for a spot?? but i would squat with your knees pick them up then roll back at the same time put the dumbells on your knees and kick your knees up to put them at your chest all in one movement . i do the same when doing shoulders but seated. make sense??
