Supplement store owners??

So I've had some ideas brewing about opening up a nutrition store.. kinda curious if any members here own their own company and could shed some light on this subject

On a serious note from what I've researched so far your typical vitamin Shoppe makes most it's money from general nutrition supplements

Don't go buying a franchise. Most won't even exist in 5 years. The big stores kill their own franchise owners
No I don't want any part of a franchise.. I think it'd be cheaper starting my own.
The only store in my town is a gnc and it's a ghost town lol

You're correct. I talk to a manager at a local vitamin shoppe from time to time and he said the exact same thing. It's mostly older people buying vitamins and general supplements and not sports performance supplements. HOWEVER, another guy I know who owns a shop specifically geared towards sports supplements kills it because he's knowledgeable about them and carries things the vitamin shoppe doesn't want to mess with.

I say to go with your own niche bro, be what GNC is not and get your own customer base. You'll be known for just that and not another general supplement store

I dunno even how they make money at all? I will tell you what i buy. Whey and creatine thats it. I do patronize my local small privately owned supp shop because i like too but in all honesty i could replace them with ordering the same products from Amazon, for cheaper.

The only clientele i could possibly see buying all those garbage grey area supps are uninformed newbs, uninformed vets or some one who hasnt crossed over to the dark side yet. Thats who they target. "Steroid like" supps that WE as juicers know are bogus. Alot of those damn supps even have names that soooo closely ressemble actual steroids its sickening. I think the last time i was in my favorite supp store reupping on some whey and creatine i noticed a bottle of d-ball. Pretty fuckin ridiculous.

Yea man, some of those gray area supplements will give boosts in strength and water weight but the sides are even worse than steroids!!! You are right though, that's the exact market they target and the owner is geared out of his mind on real shit

And how many of them claim to be non-toxic to the liver but destroy it?? OMG, I have known guys using shit like sasquatch and pack on like 20 lbs just like dbol and then go get bloodwork to find out their liver is rocked

Yea, and also have to look at the market for all of this too. They're not usually repeat buyers, it's a kid trying something once and never purchasing again

Id keep my integrity and not sell the shit named after real drugs... That is pretty frustrating to see those companies make millions of ignorant people

My buddy owns two stores and I help him out whenever he needs it.
He makes his most money off protein, glutamin, multi vitamins, and pre workouts.

He pulls in about $30k profit. Stores have been open for about 10 years. He can't wait to get rid of them.

Edit: the profit is monthly. But he also has both his stores paid off

Many, many years ago i worked for a vitamin/supplement store.

One day i found the invoice from (i believe) BOSS nutrition or wholesale or whatever they are/were named and the cost of the supplements was dirt cheap. Of course we bought in bulk, but still, the price per unit was a fraction of what we marked it up and sold it for.

If you got the capital and the connects, go for it, brother!

Odd that you only say one invoice?? Didn't they have yoU input orders into the system?

Yes, most 5lb protein containers cost $20-25. I'm still good buddies with my friend who owns the stores and he gives me things for cost. I just really don't take supplements anymore.

Most things are marked up 40%, and some companies like Magnum, iForce, Intek, and Oh Yeah (to name a few), can be marked up as much as 60-70% because those things are DIRT cheap. He orders most his stuff through Europa.

OP - it depends on how big of a city you live in... but my buddy had his stores open for about 5 years, then he knocked everything down to about 10-20% markup and did that for about a year, ran all the other little supplement shops out of business. Now his 2 stores run the entire state. Makes some pretty good money. But like I said, he hates it.

When I work there on occasions when his employee can't make it, having to listen to people's dumb ass stories and people bitch about stuff.... some people Come in and talk about how they've lost 60 pounds and I think it's badass and congratulate them, but then there's the people who come in and just complain about work and how they can't lose weight and this and that..... kinda have to be a people person or a good bullshitter. I'm neither
