Sushi and protein

i jus started eatin sushi and i was just wondering if ayone knows how much protein and carbs are in a tuna and salmon roll ???thx

More importantly, can protein from raw fish be digested by our bodies? For instance I remember reading on here that there is no point in drinking raw eggs since we cannot digest and use the protein until the egg has been cooked.

As for the rolls, I don't think there is too much protein in them as there isn't much fish in there; then again if you eat 18 of them you may get a decent amount. I would think the sushi or sashami would have much higher protein content since it is a much larger portion of fish. Anyone know the actual numbers?? I would like to know this also as I like sushi alot.

While we're on the subject of sushi, let me stress this - know the place you're eating it at or risk getting food poisoning. Quick story that happened last year: I have been eating sushi at the same place for years now; I even know the sushi chef and he's always giving me extra free food, etc. My brother ate there alot with me and neither of us ever got sick from there. I warned him as well to be careful where he ate raw fish. One day he was at Garden State Plaza and decided to eat some sushi rolls from the sushi stand in the foodcourt. It was the first time he had ever tried sushi from there. He had food poisoning for the next several days; it wasn't pretty.

you don't have to get rice with your fish. just order sashimi. sashimi is just cut up raw fish. sushi is cut up fish on a bed of white rice. and the rolls are self explanatory = tons of white rice. i eat a lot of sashimi when i go out for sushi. the rice is a waste and just a filler. if you order mostly sashimi when you go out you'll get tons of protein.

Another guy from Jersey huh? Cool. Ever try going to Minado? (sp?) I forget what town its in i think Little Ferry its right off of rte. 46 @ the little ferry circle off of south river street, nice place, sushi buffet, hibachi, all kinds of good shit, only like 23 bux a head i think, definately worth checking out if you like sushi...

I love sushi. I don't see how fish can't be a good source of protein and omega 3s raw or not. I know that some people say that certain protein sources aren't properly digested unless cooked. I'm not sure if I buy into that.

The problem is I can go to a sushi bar for LUNCH and spend $60 all by myself. And still be ready to eat 1.5hrs later. It's too expensive to be a decent source of nutrition. I consider it a treat. I generally avoid most of the rolls though (love the zushi-maki (hand rolls) though) cause they have sauces and junk on them. I'm not a low carb guy though. Rice is a staple in my diet.

I luv sushi...not sure of its carb and protein ratio...but can guess, the carbs are more due to the rice...IMO, I eat sushi as a treat and dont worry about the calories....

How do you guys eat that!! EEEWWWWW!!! I had bad seafood poisioning during first week at Myrtyle Beach in 94. I won't touch fish it the worst food poisioning in the world.

Yeah. Lots of calories cause of the fat content. The best fish for sushi are fatty fish like salmon, etc. That's why fatty tuna is more expensive than yellow tail. But you have to consider the type of fat. Salmon is super fatty compared to some other fishes but is still one of the best for you because of all the Omega3's.

I'm with Karch. If I'm dropping $60 on lunch. Screw the calories. :D

Next time you're in there ask them if they have "super white tuna" can't remember the Japanese name, but they should know what you're talking about. That stuff is UNBELIEVEABLE. Damn, it's so good.

And with sushi? Give me a Kirin Ichiban or warm sake.
