Syringe filters bursting!!

Hey, so last few times I have brewed some gear the filter has burst and I have ended up losing about half the oil, last time I was doing 50ml of NPP and I was filtering through my normal .22 filter and suddenly it burst and I must have lost 25ml plus!! Fucking annoying!

I’m using a caulk gun now as it was horrendous doing it with just my fingers. When the last one burst it wasn’t like I was applying a shit load of pressure and being impatient, I was doing drip by drip wanting to avoid the same thing happening again.

Anyone come across this issue before? Need to make some more later today and just thought I would ask for some advice before wasting any more gear.

Btw I’m using GSO and 18%/2% and making it 100mg/ml.

Cheers

Are you using whatmans?
I've use one syringe filter and I'll never ever ever use that mother fucking pain in my ass again. I cranked the holy hell out of it with a caulk gun .

My advice is spend the 20 bucks on a millipore bottle top.

Just go bottle top man. Syringe filters are the most tedious fucking things. You can get a complete bottle top set up. But I'd set it on a Pyrex baking dish because the receiver is plastic and could crack.

Or you could get a glass media bottle and sterilize it yourself. And a hand pump or vacuum pump.

What brand is it?

Next time filter over a pan so you can recover your gear, just in case, should another filter burst.
But switch brands for now.

Yeah they are whatmans I believe. I have been thinking of bottle tops for a while but most that I find are either 500ml or 1000ml, the most I tend to brew at a time is either 50 or 100ml so it’s not really worth it.

I haven’t looked into bottle top filters much but I presume you take the finished sterile product then put into vails and crimp?

I’ll give it a go with using a 3ml syringe tonight and see how I get on. It’s a 60ml syringe I normally use and it as good as impossible to get any through the filter using my fingers.

Thanks for the tips guys

If i buy disposable 500ml or a 1000ml bottletop filter, how much i can brew sust with that one filter?
i have no experience in bottle tops, only syringe filters.
Planing on brew about 3-4000ml

You're doing 4000ml? just buy 4 1000ml units. Way way way easier, and cleaner than syringe filters .

Yes 4000ml
So 1000ml unit can actualy filter 1000ml oil? That was my question.
Or does it filter only like 500 to 600ml ja get blocked.
(sorry my english)

If you only brew 50ml, use a small syringe, like 2 or 5 ml. It will go easier through the syringe filter. Thats how i do small batches.
this right here is a much better option than larger.

Pascal's Law states that the "Pressure applied to any part of a confined fluid transmits to every other part with no loss. The pressure acts with equal force on all equal areas of the confining walls and perpendicular to the walls. This is the basic principle for any hydraulic system."

Pressure = Force/ Area.

Simply stated, less surface area requires less pressure

The vessle is 1000ml . Or whatever size it's marked. I'm sure it will filter what it's rated at, possibly more but you'd have to check the manufacturers specs .

Word to the wise it will be top heavy with all that oil on top until the receiver vessle has some weight .

Finally some smart, science backed answers.

IMO the best ones are 10 ml syringes filled to 11 ml
(they always have some extra space behind the 10 ml mark), so you don't have to refill the syringe as often, yet don't strain the filter as much as a 50 ml does.

For anything over 1 liter go straight to Whatman Zapcaps.
You can even run then with positive pressure at the top with a bicycle air pump, thus no need for vacuum pumps.

Omfg! I wanted to cry whilst filtering that tonight! I did what you guys suggested and used a 3ml syringe and just kept backfilling it. I could not believe how fast it went through. I changed filters half way cos it became really slow, but still.... thank fuck I dont have to through aweful process the way I was doing for so long.

Thanks once again guys!!!
