What's wrong with Honda Civic?I driving that car almost two years,and can't see anyting wrong.BTW,when you talking about gas and gas prices,world policy,arabic people policy I must to show you one big fault.Few years ago one private firm in U.S. which work on inovate for car industry,made perfect solution for car driving for almost no cost for fuel.They maked this,one steal botlle for very high compresion,in botlle they compresed air,ordinary air from atmosphere.And when that high compresed air was injected in ordinary car engine,it was work normaly like when work on gas,but was'nt problems with heating engine,and lubricationing.That was perfect enigine,but one big company buyed it that inovation and now it is RIP.Simple example how we must to do what 'they' say...

I'm just old enough to remember seeing a virtually identical chain letter being passed around in 1979 during the oil shocks of the period. It didn't work then and it won't work now.

Furthermore it's wrong on so many points I don't know where to start:

1. Gas prices are currently at a historical low when you consider inflation. See http://www.ghg.net/stuart/gasprice/gasprice.html. In fact right now gas in constant dollars is far cheaper than it was most of the 80's. The absolute price may have gone up, but that's true of every commodity due to inflation. Consider this: gas at $2/gallon is cheaper than milk or coca-cola!

2. Gasoline prices are driven mostly by the price of crude oil on the world market, which itself is driven by supply (OPEC) and world demand. If the recent price increases in U.S. were cooked up solely by the oil companies, you'd expect that prices would only be rising in the U.S., but in fact they are going up all over the world. Gas prices in CA and certain other regions in the U.S. are even more volatile since these areas use 'boutique' blends of gasoline that only a few refineries make and then only in periodic batches.

3. High gas prices don't mean higher oil company profits. Historically there's never been a strong correlation between gas prices and company profits. This makes sense as people are most likely to cut back on discretionary driving during peak prices offsetting any increased revenue. The best way for them to make a profit is by keeping prices the same during a brief dip in the price of crude oil. Nobody complains when prices are stable, and there's no political heat.

4. Oil companies are public companies and have to declare and distribute their profits. It's not like they're like Scrooge McDuck and just store their profits in giant silos of gold and currency. If they were making money hand over fist, you'd expect their stock price to be going up. In fact if you look at Exxon's 5-year history, its stock price has been remarkably stable. If you really believe they're ripping us off, don't waste your time passing chain letters - buy oil company stock now!!

5. Even if people really did cut out a complete day's worth of gas (and not just shift it to other days), the effect would be mostly to hurt the individual proprietors of gas stations who buy gas from the large distributors and sell it on a narrow margin. And gas would still cost the same since there's no where else to get it any cheaper.

The real problem with gas is that it's too damn cheap. Alternative technologies aren't going to be competitive with it until they have at least a 2 to 1 financial advantage over it. At $2/gallon, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Hey let's face it. For next year Iraq will need 50 billion dollars to survive.
If the US administration would say to the top auto makers here in the US... Here is 50 billion, you now have to make auto's that get 60 miles per gallon or better or we will go to europe.

US auto mfg. can do it and still have great top of the line speed on their cars.

Maetenloch, good post. The chart that was posted for historical prices was pretty good, but doesnt really show whether gas prices are within historically low levels. Either way, the inflation-adjusted price of gas has been in the same range for the past 18 years. The US also has some of the lowest fuel prices in the world. You dont see Europeans bitching about the $5/gal theyve been paying for the past 15 years.

Mal also made another good point. How many of you are more than willing to pay $1.80 for a cup of basic coffee at Starbucks, or $3.75 for a latte? No one seems to bitch about the fact that the $1.80 cup of coffee is really pushing $13/gal or $24/gal for the latte. How about bottled water? $1.39/qt ends up costing $5.56/gal, or a 2 liter of coke translates into $2.38/gal. Or $15/gal for that 6-pack of beer you bring home, well, maybe only $8/gal if you buy shitty American beer.

These chain letters are totally moronic and the people that write them are even more retarded for coming up with the idea and spreading their bushwa around the globe.

1 day is 1/365 (plus a .25 if you count leap year) of a year.

One days worth of gas is therefore 1/365 of what we USE in a year.

One day isn't going to do anything, period, at all, anywhere, because the gas stations fluctuate more than that during a year. The gas stations would simply buy 1/30 th or LESS (some don't get filled monthly even) gas next time. (yeah, used to work at a gas station when I was young).
