the fast mimicking diet: lose fat (and gain a little muscle)

it may sound counterintuitive, but that's the way it is.
autophagy, look it up.
It says many of the benefits of fasting occur while liver glycogen is depleted. So wouldn't you achive the same benefit if you were to use a low carb diet?

I just don't understand how fasting would not break down protein and lead to muscle loss.

The more catabolic you go between meals has been shown to lead to more anabolism from the next meal. Ppl on bodybuilding forums have always been scared of losing muscle from poor meal timing but the truth is meal timing's effects impact on body comp is very very minimal

I also like the fact that I don't have to cook, pack, and eat six+ meals a day. ive done the bodybuilding "lifestyle", and its not for me.
and dare I say there may a "spiritual" benefit. fasting for 3 days or more, or a drastically reduced calorie intake causes changes in the brain. a heightened sense of awareness. maybe evolutionary wise, to be on the lookout for food.
and food tastes a lot better. when I was a kid, me my dad used to go fishing a lot. all day, nothing to eat. when we'd get back to the car, we'd eat some fruit and crackers with peanut butter. it was a bounty. and then go out for dinner, omg. I miss those times.

from what ive read, some of them.
limiting protein intake, actually essentially eliminating protein intake for short periods of time, has a different desired result. so... fasting.

Yes but aging of the brain and CNS. IF and CR have been shown to increase BDNF which is a protein which helps with growth of neurons associated with learning and memory. But again, exercise does this as well and the degree of exercise induced BDNF elevations is dependent on the intensity according to alan aragon.
Aragon wrote a very nicely referenced article about fasting. It's worth a read.

not sure if this is it.

I been doing the intermediate fasting for a week now while I'm cutting. For some reason I feel bloated all the time. Is this normal in the beginning ?

if by "bloated", you mean you feel full from trying to cram all your meals or calories into a much shorter time frame, then maybe. especially if you are accustomed to eating 4-8+ meals a day. and ive experienced this before when eating close to bed time.
not sure how many calories your trying for. or macro %. and sometimes the actual food can matter. protein shakes might help. particularly at the "breakfast" part.

you don't necessarily need IF for a cut. I do it for other reasons myself. aside from health benefits, its easy for me. and ive never had much problem eating big meals. or not eating big meals. but eating just enough, 4-8 times a day is not for me.

then again, my diet or eating style sometimes changes, and ill eat throughout the day. but ill almost always skip breakfast. it is a work in progress. especially now with limited time from work. im trying to make a challenge. Ive always hated cooking, packing, and eating 4-8 times daily. I want to leave work with nothing, and just run. ive got some ideas and plans.

I been trying it for the health benefits. But I do honestly prefer eating a little earlier. By 10am I'm cranky sluggish hungry. I'm not a all out big eater at one time. I noticed the passed two days I could barely get all my macros in, and I'm at a 500 cal deficit.

ease into it. assess the costs and benefits to your particular goals.
there is also a "reverse" IF diet, where you eat early but not late. IF diets usually seem to have a 16 hour fast and 8 hour feed. so make it fit for whatever is comfortable for you.
