Trainning at gym for first time, ego problems

I just started trainning at the local ymca in Jan.I've always trainned at home but my wife signed up for family plan and I need my weight room at home for the kids junk. Anyway, there seems to be about 2 guys lifting there that are really strong and dont parade around in string tank tops and work nothing but bi's every single time they are there. The rest of these idiots do quarter smith machine squats, pile weight on leg press and barely move it, use their entire body to do semi heavy bar curls,etc.etc. The amazing thing is that alot of these guys are bigger in the upper body than me and yet they do half (or less) the work I do. Its really hard to lift some days with all these morons around me and me feeling like a wimp when I know better.I know for a fact that most of these guys are either currently on gear or have been recently. The dumbasses talk about it not knowing whos listening and none of them know me from Adam, for all they know I could be a cop or narc!Is the gear allowing them to get their size and not be all that strong? BTW, I did 5x5 for most of last year and just started DFHT going into my third week. I've made some really great strength gains and DFHT seems to really working well.Sorry for the long post but this shits been eating at me for a while and I dont really have anyone else to question or rant to.

Mike,
If your spending even 20% if your time in the gym listening to the idiots, you're throwing away a lot of valuable time. Focus that energy on you!. Get an iPod, load it with good tunes so you're not distacted by the chat, watch yourself (not others) in the mirror and ignore everything that's a distraction. Great results amost guaranteed.

sounds to me like you're a bit too focused on these other guys and how much weight they do etc.. sounds also like your a bit jealous of their physiques...

Don't worry about what anyone else looks like or what they do. Who gives a shit?

This is an AAS board. No one here is going to stroke your ego and tell you your better than the two big guys in your gym because Your Natural and they aren't...

Bottom line, if you want your ego stroked work out at Curves. Every gym in America has atleast a few guys who are on the bean.

Take care and good luck,

P

These are your own personal demons. When you see a guy driving a nicer car than you, or with a better house, do you automatically assume he's a trust fund baby? That's not a dig, it's just something to ask yourself.

You really do need to focus. Especially seeing as how you have a family, you're time is limited already. You need to be thinking about how to get the most out of your time there. I have a family too, and something that might work better for you in more respects than one, is morning workouts. Morning workouts will consist of the same few dedicated people. Those types you reference above are not commonly at the gym at this time. Also, morning workouts will leave more time for you and your family in the evening. That is of course assuming that you work a "normal" business day.

Don't regress to bad form

Ill chime in. I agree that you need to stay focused. Ill add this too. One of the biggest mistakes I see in the gym is the competition among lifters. Im not talking about you and your workout buddy pushing each other set after set. Im talking about envious competition that inevitably leads to poor workout form. One of the best things I ever did was to workout at home for about 2 years. My perception has never been the same. I cleaned up all my lifts because I didnt think about the dude with the stringy tank top. Perfect form leads to better gains.

Progressive loading is certainly the key to success. But, we get too focused on more weight and more reps, when that may not be the best indication of progress. Case in point: I show you how to power bench press and you add 30lbs to your bench in a week. Thats not progress. You lift faster and get two extra reps. Thats not progress. Im not saying this is you, but I am advising to beware of it. We all do it to some degree, just catch yourself and dont get hung up on the dudes at your gym.

The advice on wearing headphones is priceless.

I never gave a crap about what others in the gym looked like, trained like or acted like......you might try to think this way.

I hear what you all are saying about focusing and I agree. The real question I was asking was about a couple of the dudes being so big and yet not very strong. Is that a result of a bbing type workout? I'm not jealous of anyones physique, well maybe a little since I need to lose the gut, and I have respect for someone who works hard to maintain that look. I'm not to sure what made anyone think I was looking for an ego stroke,I guess maybe I just came across the wrong way. I guess after working out alone for so many years its hard to ignore some of the dumbshit in the gym.Btw I wasn't putting anyone down for doing aas,my best friend is regularly on and I've done one cycle.I was putting them down for so openly and loudly talking about, not knowing who was around.I was pretty sure this was an aas site but thanks for clarifying that for me.

It's simply genetics. You can train your ass off.....correctly, and I guarantee there is someone out there that doesn't have to do much at all, and they'll look better. I'm stronger than a lot of guys that are MUCH larger than myself, but that's my genetics and my choice. If I wanted to get to 250 I would eat my way there. It is possible, just not as easy for my frame.

Another example....I'm blessed with a great vertical jump and I don't even train it. Others could jump sole themselves all day and never come close to the same vertical. Sure they could improve it, but it's a question of how much. It's just genetics, and you do the best with what you have by using your brain.

Yeah you're right,I didn't think about that. Oh well. l'm not dedicated enough to get a bodybuilders physique,I like beer and pizza way too much.I'll just keep on trying to get stronger and work at concentrating on me and no-one else at the gym.

I talk shit about every damned poser-wanna be bodybuilder in my "fitness center." At least in my head. I always have my Mp3 player cranked to drown out the women talking and the guys dropping the 30lb dumbells. I too had to give up my home gym for kids but my workouts are more intense now that I somehow feel a little competition. One think you should never, ever be ashamed of is, how much weight you're using. Flat bench, which seems to be the only indicator of a man's strength is one of my weakest areas. Past shoulder problems cause this but I was pretty embarrassed of the weight I use for quite some time. You're always going to have guys that think they own the place....

Well 1st of all 1/2 1/4 even 1/8 lifts work for building strength and muscle .. I don't know why people have to judge workouts of others by saying O LOOK HE ISN'T REALLY LIFTING THAT MUCH BECAUSE HE ISN'T DOING A FULL REP .. People who say that just like to argue .. With that being said, don't worry what everyone else is doing, get a good workout/diet and stick with it .. You have no idea how much this shit "" he's not really that strong because he isn't doing it full range .. " If you don't do full range people will think you are weak and it doesn't look good in the gym" It's sad how much alot of you care about what other people think about you in the gym .. I will honestly say that i do judge people at times in every day life but NEVER and i mean NEVER do i judge people in the gym because i am smart enough to know that there are many many ways to build strength/size ... Anyway, don't worry about these guys, just stick to your program .. If you really want to get to know them and find that you can't keep your eyes off of them .. maybe you think about them after them gym at night :D .. ok i will stop being an ass now .. really if it is bothering you why they are gaining, then ask them .. tell them they seem to be lifting like pussies yet seem to be growing,so what is their secret.

Not as strong as they look due to BBing workouts? What do you consider strength? 4 reps? 1 rep like powerlifters? My wife laughs when i do even 4 reps because she says anyone can lift a weight 4-5 or even 6 times :) ... IMO BBing type training prepares the body for every day life much better than powerlifting training does. .. Powerlifters don't have the stamina Bbers do .. Now strength athletes like the ones in strongman comps,i have respect for .. those guys have strength and alot of endurance/stamina .. I am in no way putting down powerlifters or i don't mean for it to sound like i am,but let's face it,6 reps isn't that hard to stay motivated to accomplished, like 10-15 reps are ... I think the 20rep squat and deads are great exercises and would make a nice base for a program .. I think it's funny when someone asks what my 1rm bench is after 1st meeting me .. I don't even want to hear anything else that comes out of their mouth after a question like that ..

Geez, where to start replying to that? For starters I dont claim to be a power lifter, not even close. I do 5x5 for most of the time and will switch to doing sets of 8-10 reps for 3or4 set when I start getting bored with 5x5. I also just started dfht 3 weeks ago. The thing is, I've tried to talk to most of the guys there and the only one that is friendly at all happens to be into powerlifting. I dont claim to be an expert on anything lifting related but I've been lifting there since January, usually 4 days per week, and the same guys are doing the same partial, cheat(heaving weights around) with the same weight day after day. I also dont base strength on the almighty bench press. A good example of what I'm talking about is this one dude with friggin huge arms that all I've yet to see him do is bar curls with 50&60 lbs.He doesn't do alot of reps or sets and he ends up cheating on half of his reps. I think we decided earlier in this post that I needed to quit paying attention to other people and thats what I plan on doing. It also bothers so much because there is quite a few young highschool guys lifting there and the watch every move these other dudes make and then copy them. I see them loading way to much weight on the bars and then using terrible form for just a few reps. Im sure they'll end up getting hurt or be unhappy with their gains and quitting.I've tried to talk to a couple of them but I they seem to think Im full of shit. I also find it really hard to believe that I'm the only one who has noticed this shit in the gym and I'm getting a little tired of being flamed for talking about it. I dont judge anyone for how they work out, it all started as simply asking about their size vs strength.I think it was already cleared up earlier yet Im still catching shit about it. I also have noticed that my work outs have been much more intense and I dont screw around as much between sets since joining the gym. All in all I actually enjoy the gym workout more than the home workout, I guess I just have to get used to the other stuff.
