Unfiltered gear storage

Anyone know how long you can let sit unfiltered gear in a borosilicate media bottle?

Like doing a 500ml batch and only filter 50-100ml for immediate use and let the remaining 400-450ml unfiltered in the unfiltered bottle.

Dont know what borosilicate is but if it’s plastic I recently had an issue with that my gear ate through it so leave it in glass

From wikipedia :

Borosilicate glass is a type of glass with silica and boron trioxide as the main glass-forming constituents. Borosilicate glasses are known for having very low coefficients of thermal expansion (≈3 × 10−6 K−1 at 20 °C), making them resistant to thermal shock, more so than any other common glass. Such glass is less subject to thermal stress and is commonly used for the construction of reagent bottles.

Virtually all modern laboratory glassware is made of borosilicate glass. It is widely used in this application due to its chemical and thermal resistance and good optical clarity, but the glass can react with sodium hydride upon heating to produce sodium borohydride, a common laboratory reducing agent.

Theoretically is should be able to stay indefinitely, or at least as long as it stays in vials. Few months at least and years if stored in ideal conditions. Why not just filter it all and store it in the vials?

I'm only setup with siryngue filter/steril vial at the moment, nothing for bottle top filtering, crimper, sterilizing vial etc.
I've just start looking into bottle top to at least store it sterilized, i think it could be a better option.

Thx for your input

So you brewed and just dumped it in the media bottle? you'll most likely be fine as far as the compounds won't break down, just add a little heat and mix before filtering the next batch.

I'm just anal about being sterile, and hate the idea of unfiltered stuff sitting in a bottle for a long time. Yes the BA is there to keep the bacteria from growing but prolonged times just weird me out.

Personally I'd filter all 50 vials. If you don't plan on doing much more brewing then get a single bottle top filter with plastic media bottle, sterile of course and filter it with a hand pump. Then take a sterile needle/syringe to fill your sterile vials. It's a little more involved but it knocks out all 500ml at once and now the vials just sit in storage.

No didn't brewed it yet, just want to do it right and not risk loosing a batch.

I'm gonna buy a bottle top filter and hand pump so i won't let sit anything unfiltered in a media bottle. And when i'll be done filtering i'll put it in steril vial. Safest option i think.

Thx for your advice mp46

No problem, might me some effort to draw up 500ml through a syringe to put in vials but at least this way it'll be done and you can toss the vials in the cabinet for months with no worries.

Use bottle top filter into sterile media bottle. Get a septa top so you can draw from it if needed. Alternatively backfill via pouring into a 60ml syringe and fill 6 sterile sealed vials at a time.

Thx, great idea, ddidn't cross my mind. It could be more convenient

It's better to filter it
While oil doesn't feed as much bacteria as water does, some rare bacteria can still feed on it.
Even if you later filter out those bacteria, they might leave some potentially harmful by-products that can't be removed by filtering because they are oil soluble.
