West Hartford Police claim that their K9 drug dogs can sniff out anabolic steroids. Fact or fiction?

Police say after they found the heroin, that's when they called for the K9 unit and when the dog started sniffing, it went crazy, and that is when they knew they had more than just heroin in the car.

"And low and behold we start searching more places and come up with a ton of steroids, hundreds of pills, and five vials of liquid steroid that according to the pharmacists, he can't even get," said Lt. Estes. "This is the kind of stuff that only comes from a physician."

I'd like the know the specific training this K9 had, as it pertains to steroids. I've never heard of a school that trains dogs for this.

I doubt the dog was trained for steroids. I've seen this claim made a few times over the years but I'm still skeptical - not that it could be done but that resources are spent on this.

I'm guessing someone carrying around heroin has probably stored other "detectable" drugs along with the steroids at some point.

I suspect you are right. To be effective, the dog would have to be trained on maybe a dozen different compounds. I think this would be a very difficult thing to do, but I'm not an expert in K9 training... I'm pretty sure my dogs train me.

No such training exists. If they alerted to anything it was a rub off - cocaine - etc.

I can assure you that the dog did not sniff steroids.. What probably happened is that it detected an "area" of high human activity ,or, a solvent that these compounds may have in common.
