What takes longer, to recover from ..

A set taken to fatigue failure .. say a set of 20
reps taken to the point of intense burning from lactic acid
where it's just way too much acid to handle

OR

A set taken to concentric failure with let's say, 5 reps.

So, basically one is failure because of intense burning
and one is because the muscle just can not do any more work

And I mean failure, not just "O man, I can't do anymore"
I mean to the point where your partner knows to grab the weight
without you saying a word, because it's beginning to fall and fast.

This is not some test BTW, I really want to know what everyone thinks

I'm out!

the 5 rep to failure set.... this is because there is much more weight being used compared to the 20 rep set. Therefore, the muscle is producing much more tension to lift the weight AND the CNS would be more fatigued, requiring more time to recover. The 20 rep set would induce metabolic fatigue (ie. lactic acid and other metabolic waste building up in the muscle). The waste products quickly diffuse out of the muscle... Also, each of the 20 reps is a lot easier than the reps in the heavy set so there would clearly be less micro-trauma to the muscle.

hope i helped, jigalo
