To expand on your last point - any time you're approached by law enforcement, it's a consensual stop until you're detained.
You dont have to provide any information and you don't have to ID.
Most LEO assume that you're ignorant of your rights and they'll try to intimidate you into complying. Just ask if you're being detained.
Keep asking until they give you a clear Yes or No answer.
If they're detaining you but unable to articulate reasonable suspicion of a crime in commission, committed, or about to be committed - congrats, you might've found yourself a payday. Start recording if you're not already, you're being unlawfully detained.
Either way, as soon as they tell you that you're being detained invoke the 5th and, as noted, remain silent. If they have a case for anything you'll be cuffed and booked. Just hang tight on your attorney.
