What were these guys taking???

Hello everyone. I just finished viewing The movie Pumping Iron. I have to admit every time I watch that movie I'm surprised of the size and condition Arnold, Franco and Lou could achieve.

My question is what the HELL were they taking to get so big and conditioned? Also, how was their diet? Anyone has a clue??? I remember one part where they are narrating about Lou's success as a bodybuilder. The camera shows Lou in his room and he has several bottles on his dresser. These bottles look to be tabs and possibly steriods but I'm not too sure.

In any event, what were they taking? I'm sure they were not taking HGH and insulin but were they using Primo, Dbol, Winny and Test? Anyone knows?

Okay Chris so you're telling me Arnold, Lou and Franco were using "pretty much" what today's guys use, as far as steroids go? So I'm considering that Arnold used Test, Primo, Dbol, Winny and Anavar? Correct?

How much do you think these guys were using? I mean I think Arnold had a bench near or at 500lbs so these boys were strong back then. It's just amazing to see how big and conditioned Arnold and them were in the 70's.

Also, does anyone remember Reg Park? I saw some old pictures and I saw film on him in "The Making Of Pumping Iron." That boy was pretty big considering he competed back in the 50's or 60's. Not sure which year but Reg was straight.

In all I'm just amazed on some of the old timers. My philosophy is how can you succeed in the future if you don't know about the past?

Other than Franco, most of those guys werent anywhere near as lean as guys today. IMO, they carried a much most aesthetic physique, but the conditioning cant even compare to todays standards. The level of development wasnt as high, and it seems like there was a definitely lack of emphasis on leg training. These guys had huge upper bodies and moderate sized legs (Arnold, as an example).

Guys from the 60s and 70s, IMO, have the best bodies ever. Its something that seems achievable with a lot of hard work and time, unlike trying to achieve the size/look of todays guys. Plus, those guys way back then actually looked like the pinnacle of health.

Agreed!

My guess is well mainly things like primo dbol test, etc with a thyroid drug. I watched an interview with arnold on the show "on the record" he admitted to using roids but he said the dosages they used are a far cry from what guys from today use. one question though, was cavdverject(original hgh) avialble to them back then? if so then i imagine that, that was used by some pros.
and i agree with bob to as well that their bodies looked the best and if they competed today mike katz would probably fair the best out of all of them.

Agreed

I agree with ya Bob 1000% of the guys from the 60's and 70's had better "pleasing shape." For me I'm just not into VERY LARGE bodybuilders that look like freaks. I mean, it's cool and all but if I had to select a body I'd like to have a body that's more pleasing than large.

Does anyone know if the guys from the 60's 70's carb loaded? I wonder how their diet was? I'm sure their diet was not as strick as today's boys but i tell you in the movie Pumping Iron Arnold had a detail back that could hang with today's guys. Not as thick but he was ripped pretty good.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that it had less to do with what they were taking and more to do with their wills to be beasts.

Not to beat the same dead horse that I've been beating forever, but it has a whole fuckload less to do with your drug choices than it does with your nutrition, training and rest.

They also, like all pro BB's, had great genetics.

The guys back then always look the best to me. As far as anabolics they took Testosterone, Deca, Primo, D-ball, Anadrol & Winny. I read from a few places that Arnolds pre-contest stack was Primo and D-ball. Dosages?? Who can really say fo sure, except those involved. Look at it this way back they did not know about anti-estrogens and Armidex, so I so their dosages were very low compared to todays standards. They also did not use HGH or Insulin at that time. HGH was available in the mid 80's and the use of both started around Dorian Yates time.

Wrong. HGH was most certainly available. Don't quote me on the exact date, but I believe it was first "discovered" in the late 30's.

It would be interesting to see how some of those guys would have looked if they had access to (or were willing to do) the drug regimens of today, in conjunction with more "enlightened" training and dietary practices. Sergio Oliva, for one, comes to mind.

I disagree Grizz. Only way they could get GH is if they injected ground up pituitary glands taken from cadavers(I doubt they did this). The first version of recombinant human growth hormone was made by Genentech and approved for sale by the FDA in Oct 1985.

70's

Many yrs. ago (I'm in my 40's) I met Harold Poole, who was famous in the 60's. He had once dated my X wife (my 1st. one) before i met her and he trained with Bill Pearl, Arnold, Franco, Katz, etc., and he told me that Arnold and most of the boys were taken only D-bol and Cyp., because that was all they could get or knew about. I don't how accurate he was but I think he was close. He said they trained like animals, and that we (modern BB's) were all pussys!!!LOL
Bastard!
Just my input garybass Boy!
I'm losing my F#@kin mind, I spelled my own user wrong!

Conti.

Hey armsports and graybass I too would "love" to see how Arnold and Sergio Oliva would have fair against, Dorian, Ronnie, Flex and Kevin. One thing I do notice is that the boys back then had what I call a FULL CHEST.

Seems like some bodybuilders today don't have that full chest. But in any event, just imagine with technology, drugs, dieting, and training how Arnold and some of those 60's and 70's boys would have looked today.

If all they were taking is Dbol and some Test and looked like that GOD ONLY HELP Planet Earth had they use what today's bodybuilders use. I don't even want to imagine as it would be too freaky.

Imagine Arnold at 275lbs. With Arnold's genetics 275lbs would look like 300lbs. Does anyone else agree???

Yes, synthetic gh wasn't available, but the extract from cadavers was. As to whether or not they used it, I don't know and I don't really care. The point is just that it was available.

the cadaverject(gh from the pituitary gland) is what i had posted about. i doubt they used it because what ive read about it is it was very dangerous. Not to still the thread but did anyone see the show on lyle alzado he used cadaverject like no other according to the sports century
