When do you deadlift?

I've been following a push/pull/legs split which seems to be the best routine for me to date. On my legs day, I've been alternating every week between squats one week and then deadlifts/leg presses another. I used to do squats every week and want to go back to it (frankly leg presses have gotten too easy and don't accomplish next to shit anyway). I feel that squats and deads on the same day would be an overkill and am thinking of throwing them in on back/bis day. This means I'd be doing pull downs, cable rows, dead lifts, and something short and sweet for bis. Then two days later I'd be doing squats. Is this gonna be an overkill too? When does everyone else do deads?

This is a great question..i look forward to reading other responses..my partner and me always argue back and forth trying to decide which day to dead lift on..it's either on back day or leg day...I really prefer to do them on leg day..he likes to do them on back day. If i do them on back day I need atleast 3 days before I do heavy squats to recover or vice versa. The heavy squats and dead lifts are the key for me..the leg presses do not do much.

You can squat and dead on the same day. I do. Personally, I'm confused as to why you think they're a leg exercise. They might use a little legs in the intial stages of the pull, but they're far from a replacement for squats.

edit- oh yeah, if you're doing a push/push/legs split, then the obvious answer is to put them on a "pull" day, since you pull a deadlift. ;)

I have to be carefull with my lower back becuase of nagging injuries to the area..when I dead lift atleast at the first 30% of the intitial exercise I really focus on picking up the weight using my hams and glutes..relieving some of the presure from my lower back..

I was more worried about working too many large muscle groups on the same day. And I'm relegated to doing a three day split. I mean it when I say that's all my schedule will allow.

I do light squats before I dead on the same day without any probs. I have heard other people say deads work legs but I don't get this. What kind of deads are these folks doin? I feel them in my back not my legs.

I found a great back rotation to be: Pull ups or Lat pull downs, one arm rows, deadlift.

agreed, I pretty much do the same thing...it has got my back huge. I also throw in some super heavy bar-lifts which really hits my traps and forearms, which in the long run should improve my grip strength and how much weight I can hold...thus improving my max deadlift. When I did the original 5x5 program I did squats and deadlifts the same day...it wasn't too bad, it actually improved my strength greatly. Good luck........and remember "Lift till ya puke":D
