Who is on the jury in the Roger Clemens trial?

The jury of Roger Clemens’ peers includes a yoga instructor, a Philadelphia Eagles fan and a cousin of former major leaguer Al Bumbry.

But when the perjury and obstruction trial of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner commences Wednesday with opening statements, the jury pool will strikingly lack one segment of the population: males.

The Clemens jury is made up of 10 women and two men and is largely African-American. [...]

Given Washington’s racial demographics — 50.7 percent of the population is black, according to the 2010 census — Carl Tobias, a professor at the University of Richmond (Va.) School of Law, wasn’t surprised by the jury’s racial makeup.

He was surprised, however, that there were so many women.

A yoga instructor who is opposed to the War on Drugs made the cut. So did a lawyer for the Federal Communications Commission, a young mother who works two jobs and a woman who thinks NFL quarterback Michael Vick was "done wrong" when he was sent to prison on dog-fighting charges.

After four days of prodding and quizzing, prosecutors and Roger Clemens' defense team picked 12 jurors and four alternates for the former Yankee pitcher's trial on six perjury-related charges. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton will deliver instructions to the jury Wednesday, and opening arguments are scheduled to begin later in the day.

The jury of 10 women and two men who will decide if Clemens lied when he told Congress he never used steroids also includes a cousin of Al Bumbry, the Baltimore Orioles outfielder who was a Red Sox coach during the retired star's years in Boston. Prosecutors and Clemens' defense team chose the jury and alternates after dismissing 20 other people without public comment from a pool of 36 potential jurors.
