MaxRep said:It doesn't have anything to do with stomach acids. It has everything to do with the deactivation of the drug by the liver.
If the steroid molecule injested orally is not protected in some way, the liver breaks down the molecule and the steroid is then unable to exert its effects. The most common way to protect the molecule is by a process known as 17 alpha alkylation. Which basically eliminates the liver's primary means of deactivating the molecule. Most injectable steroids don't have this protection and therefore are not effective when taken orally.
However, it wouldn't be correct to say they are zero percent effective, as when injested orally, a steroid such as Testosterone would have approximately +/- 3% survive the first pass through the liver. It hardly seems worth it until you realize the prescription oral testosterone, Andriol (testosterone undecanoate), only has about +/- 6% survival rate on the first pass. But that's not saying much and Andriol is generally considered ineffective as a steroid for bodybuilders. But if you want to give your little old grandma a little more spring in her step, tell her they're vitamins and watch her go!
