Hey guys, how much of a deficit do you prefer when shedding body fat? Is it better to lose it fast or slowly in your opinion. Some guys like the approach of recomp while others just want to get rid of the fat asap and start bulking.

So maintenance is better for recomp?
Recomp is a state of building muscle and losing fat. It’s really only going to happen at small deficits or surpluses, when you’re on gear, where you’re either not in a large enough deficit to blunt muscle growth or not in a large enough surplus to add appreciable fat.

a 500 cal deficit is definitely dieting to lose fat. 1000 is VERY steep.

I accidentally started to recomp on a lean bulk. I was in a pretty good surplus and as the weeks went on my training volume increased weekly. It got to the point around week 6/7 I started to drop fat with what started off as a surplus. The more I trained (weights and cardio) the increased work load put me in a deficit.

it’s better to enter a bigger deficit through increased activity than to keep dropping calories

I see. I might experiment with this recomp approach as I’m more accustomed to regular bulk and cutting. However now that I’m satisfied with where I am at in terms of weight (200lbs) I think a slower steady method will benefit. Currently running just 400 test but will increase the dose to 600 eventually as the weeks go by and progress slows.

Start at maintenance and increase activity. Then after two weeks drop 200 kcal. After another two weeks, drop another 200 kcal, and so on.

When you plateau, eat at maintenance for a few days and start dropping kcals gradually again.

Starting at a 1000 kcal deficit will set you up for disaster in no time. What are you going to do when you plateau? Drop to a 1200 deficit? You'll feel like shit and react to it by binging.
