Ex-49ers WR Rice admits to using illegal stickum on gloves

Pro Football Hall of Fame wideout Jerry Rice called for an asterisk if the Patriots were to win the Super Bowl, but on the same day, admitted to using an illegal substance when he played called stickum.

"I know this might be a little illegal, guys, but you put a little spray, a little stickum on [gloves], to make sure that texture is a little sticky," Rice said in an ESPN feature on the evolution of gloves.

Stickum is an adhesive that is available in spray and paste, and when applied to gloves, could be a tremendous aid in gripping the football.

The substance was banned by the NFL in 1981, four years before Rice was drafted by the 49ers.

On the matter of the Patriots, who were accused of deflating footballs for the purpose of grip in the AFC Divisional Round and AFC Championship, Rice said, "I'm going to be point blank, I feel like it's cheating.

"I’ve played in cold weather, I know how hard the football is and you can grip the leather [if deflated] just a little bit better."

Rice is the holder of countless records, and is the NFL's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Yeah, Lester Hayes of thee Oakland Raiders used it. The guy couldn't speak english, but he did have a nose for the ball. Stick'em back then was used for holding candles in their trays that didn't have the lil' spike on it. I still have an old can somewhere, probably next to my old lava lamp!

However I just don't believe on slandering someone if your doing it. I'm not saying to stand IP for the person being accused but kind of just acknowledge it and move on. That way when you get caught your not a hipocrite.

I talked to a guy who used to play pro. He mentioned how the new high-tech gloves have changed the game. You probably don't even need to use that stuff anymore. The gloves they have now hold the ball like they were sticky. So I ask cheating or just ahead of the times. And if he was willing to admit it then it's likely that it they all knew about it and might have been doing the same thing. I know you sure wouldn't want your gloves to be slippery or greasy. Everybody jumps all over the guy who tells the truth. People apparently can't handle the truth or just don't want to think about it.

I've heard Cris Carter and other old school WRs talk about the huge difference between gloves from back then and today.. I think Rice obviously didn't think it was a big deal or he wouldn't have came out with it..

My son is being groomed for TE and he has rock hands throw them gloves on and it is night and day. We did have to teach how to position his hands but those gloves ar epretty cool. I remember throwing them on catching balls one handed. That is why I am not impressed with that guy from the Giants. If he didn't have those gloves.
