sodium the truth!

stan said in the video that after a little while your body adjusts to the sodium. here is the video if anyone is interested

He dehydrated TF outta himself for a weigh in and then became a preacher of sodium. Medical journals warn my people against sodium. Either way that cooler looks nice.

"My people"?

I think you need to look at the big picture, how much sweating, how much water intake, and the symptoms he mentioned.

Interesting video, I'll have to look at whether I get enough - maybe my excessive back pumps are related.

They are trying to create an unnecessary market, he said they gave him flavored sodium tablets, pretty sure they're gonna be trying to sell them. And yes "My people" blacks are higher risk for elevated BP and they say sodium aids in that so our consumption should be limited.

Well, blacks in the US are fairly milk chocolate, not many "blue gums" left, so don't know if that's really an African issue - wouldn't be surprised if it's the general black enthusiasm for food (and a lot of bad food too) that is more of a problem. Look at the Maasai in Africa, they don't really have any of these issues.

I live in the South, and there's a lot of horrible food served here. You could strip it of all salt, and it'd still be bad for you. In other words, I suspect nurture (habits) rather than nature (genetic issues). It's actually a quite debated topic - not at all settled. Sickle-cell is a different story, that's purely genetics. BTW, studies show that the highest BP levels among blacks in the US are found in places with the lowest incomes - i.e. poor people with terrible eating habits.

That aside, nothing we can solve on this site, I don't think you should dismiss sodium with a "that must be limited" response - we all need to make individual assessments based on our diets and health status - not based simply on skin tones, that's silly.

I'm definitely going to be looking deeper into my sodium. potassium, magnesium intake and see where I stand.

Lol, salt tablets are older than Jesus....

Anyway, I disagree that it's an underhanded attempt to market or sell something, it's sodium..you can measure out some iodized table salt which he even mentions and you're done, no need to buy anything.

I thought it was useful information considering how the fitness mainstream considers sodium to be the devil especially with regard to it's effects on water retention. What isn't mentioned by the fitness mags or the rest of the bb'ing mainstream is it's benefits towards performance, vascularity / fullness, and not feeling like shit.

If nothing else the added perspective demonstrates how asinine it is to demonize something when it comes to nutrition, especially something that plays an important role in how you function as an athlete.

You're probably right. I just get suspicious of guy deep into their lifting career having an epiphany about how they never knew sodium was so great, but yea I looked up sodium tabs and they are old as hell thanks for that info, they also have magnesium, calcium and other stuff mixed in. I'll do more research. Thanks for not giving me a DrJim spanking

Why and how to implement sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium changes in food items and diets? - PubMed - NCBI
Why and how to implement sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium changes in food items and diets?

"The present average sodium intakes, approximately 3000-4500 mg/day in various industrialised populations, are very high, that is, 2-3-fold in comparison with the current Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of 1500 mg. The sodium intakes markedly exceed even the level of 2500 mg, which has been recently given as the maximum level of daily intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse effects on blood pressure or otherwise. By contrast, the present average potassium, calcium, and magnesium intakes are remarkably lower than the recommended intake levels (DRI). In USA, for example, the average intake of these mineral nutrients is only 35-50% of the recommended intakes. There is convincing evidence, which indicates that this imbalance, that is, the high intake of sodium on one hand and the low intakes of potassium, calcium, and magnesium on the other hand, produce and maintain elevated blood pressure in a big proportion of the population. Decreased intakes of sodium alone, and increased intakes of potassium, calcium, and magnesium each alone decrease elevated blood pressure. A combination of all these factors, that is, decrease of sodium, and increase of potassium, calcium, and magnesium intakes, which are characteristic of the so-called Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets, has an excellent blood pressure lowering effect. Sodium and potassium
Most people are potassium deficient and have too much sodium. This is not the result of low levels of potassium, but because on the one hand because the modern diet is too high in sodium (salt, main component of table salt, sodium-chloride) and on the other hand because its the balance of potassium to sodium that determines these factors.
Dosage: The minimum dose for sodium is 2.4 grams and for potassium 3.5 grams. I'll say it one more time, bodybuilders do need more potassium and also when you lose excessive water (diuretics, laxatives, alcohol, sweating, diarrhea, caffeine) more is better. If you know that it may help against kidney stones it may be wise to stack with other minerals that cause kidney damage in large amounts.
Recommended ratio: double the daily potassium vs the sodium - a 2:1 ratio

Calcium
Dosage:
1 gram to 1.2 grams daily depending on age and sex. You should dose calcium according to phosphorus and magnesium intake. Ca, P and Mg should be stacked in a 2-2-1 relation to each other. Women need less calcium than men because high estrogen levels will deposit more calcium in the bones.

Magnesium
Dosage:
400 mg is the RDA for magnesium on a 2000 calorie diet, but is usually supplemented in 750 to 1000 mg.

Zinc
Dosage:
15 mg is the daily recommended dose. Supplying 50 grams is the standard, but you will find that the best zinc supplement, ZMA, contains only 30 mg of very absorbable Zinc. Try to take in as much zinc as you do iron every day, but avoid taking them together because they will compete for absorption. Same for copper and calcium.

(There's a lot more in the article about what to stack with - and what NOT to stack with - I'm glad I keep a varied diet with lots of homegrown veggies and dark green veggies in general - in addition to all the meat.)

Damn I am pretty sodium sensitive, I panic when I go over 2000mg for the day. I get bloated easily.

And my bloating seems to only occur on my face lol
