Career ideas

There's a chance of that. But there's always a chance of getting hurt in any job.
I started out a skinny kid who was constantly in trouble with the law. Im from Cali and had barely ever travelled. I went all around the country, and to Germany, Italy, Austria, Amsterdam, Czech, Korea, and some other places. Hooked up with exotic women. Drank exotic dranks. Ate exotic food. Lifted exotic weights.
And in the end I get free college for me, free college for my son, healthcare for both of us, and I get paid a monthly retirement more than some people make working.

Its not a small decision to serve your country. There's a reason only 1% of people do it, but there are benefits. I know a lot of people who did 4 years for the free college and picked jobs that translate well. One of my friends was an air traffic controller. Did his 6 years, got free college, and got out making 80k off the bat.
Hmmmmm one question, what are exotic weights? :D

Yes, you take an aptitude test called the Asvab. Based on that score, you are given a list of jobs you qualify for. You pick what you want and sign your contract for that job.

Do you take the asvab before you actually enlist so of your only job choices are bullet sponge or human decoy you can opt out?

You can take a practice ASVAB before you take the real one. And yes, you do take it before you actually sign on the line and raise your right hand.

Not as manly or as badass as some careers mentioned above but can make good money as a real estate agent. Not a lot of class time for a chance to make 6 figures.

The whole ASVAB thing is goofy. When i went in post 9/11 all the goof balls that had brains and scored very high went USMC infantry. First time in history smart asses actually enlisted to go fight front lines ESPECIALLY in the USMC. Judges used to have to hand down sentences to make that happen. They wanted a piece of Osamas ass in the worst way possible. So our smartest and brightest picked up rifles and lead the spear tip. Me? I did score very high. Just a couple options were NOT open to me. The test is for a broad sense of knowledge. Nothing specific. So it is supposed to give the govt a good idea for a well rounded individual and where he/she should be placed

Many times smarter individuals are more likely to get in trouble with the law. Sometimes those people don't get security clearance or a recruiter will tell them they don't qualify which is a lie.

Or they just want to "kick down doors and slit throats". Which made me cringe endlessly during my time in the infantry..

Ive never heard of anything close to that mark in that field
Quarter a million a year huh?

How Much Does an Electrical Lineman Make a Year?

Straight from the IRS
Not where I live they don't. I know a few personally that would do cartwheels to get even half that.

In California it's easy to make that with the amount of overtime given. The article you posted was wrong or old, a Journeyman Lineman out of California makes over 50 an hour. Anything after 10 hours is double time, emergency or call out is double time, over 100 an hour. I've never heard of a lineman that has made less than 150k a year out here.

Outside construction with the ibew. Benifits are amazing, and you get paid very well during your apprenticeship, once you top out you can go anywhere in the country and work. MSLCAT, SWLCAT, movalleyjatc, SELCAT. Those are a few of the places you can apply. Start as a groundsman and go up from there.

Where are you out of? I assume you're a groundman?

I'm out of swlcat. And I'm an apprentice, about to be hot. Would be damn near topped out if I wouldn't have started rat. I just picked the name grunt when I logged in cause I figured nobody would have it.

Run for president... I'll vote for you.

I'm serious.

Hey, wait a minute, Eman...was the promise of legalizing all AAS not enough to secure your vote?! How about this, along with making all AAS legal, I promise to make sure all insurance policy's cover 80% of the cost!

Now, can I count on your vote? :D

Best lineman I know started out as contractors. You staying down that way or going to tramp? Lots of work in Cali and best pay. 1245 is good, 47 has fucked up politics. I have a few buddies in both and at every major utility out here.

Definitely going to go somewhere with better pay. I would love to work in cali and the pay is very tempting, just have to get the wife on board. Have a buddy that used to work for pg&e out of San Francisco and he loved it there. That's the best thing about this trade is once you get your ticket the opportunities are endless.

I have a few buddies there too, also SoCal Edison and SDGE. There's another company called Canus that's all cmp work. SDGE is a relatively small utility with a bunch of jackass know it alls. PGE and SoCal will make you 250k easy every year if you're an overtime hog. PGE is super behind with the CPUC so doing tons of pole change outs and maintenance.
