Non sterile .22 filter

this is what the people from medlabsupply said to me when I asked them the same question a week ago.

In regards to sterility, which is a very strong word, ultimately , something is either sterile, or not. There really are no degrees of sterility. Hospitals are careful about using this term at times, as well. We have sterile vials, we sell, but they come to us, From the manufacturer, completely sealed, un,opened, and are sold as such. We also have the COA s, for this product.

As far as the filters, there are two terms working here , Filtering out bacteria, which is the case with the filtration process. The filters that you received, are completely sealed, and protected from external surroundings. Even on the package from the supplier, it states they are not sterile. Once opened, anything could be subject to the air. However, the filtering process aims at filtering out , from said solution, potential bacteria. The filtering industry, is doing just that , filtering out, from said product, for usage. Your filters are coming to you, completely sealed .

Hopefully, this will help clear up, both terms, and the goal, achieved , for these processes.

Sterility might be an absolute term for a biologist for example but it is not in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. There do exist degrees of sterility.

Analytical labs often purchase non-sterile filters just for the use of filtering out potential particles or debris they don't want passing through their HPLCs. If I'm sticking something in my leg or ass it will be a sterile filter 100% of the time.
The simple question to ask Medlab is "if I'm filtering something for human injection do you recommend sterile or non-sterile?" The answer should be more clear. I'm just trying to keep you safe. Do what you will with this information.

Thanks for all the info guys. Can I also ask does it become a moot point if I plan to bake the finished vials at the end of the process? With regards to the filters I have read that I could possibly wrap the filters loosely in foil and bake for 25-30min at 250 f or less. Does this sound a viable plan to ensure a sterile finished filter? I'm trying to err on the side of caution so maybe I should just order new sterile sealed ones? Cheers

Omg this is frustrating! Just had another look through everything to find that the 50ml syringes are also not sterile. Think I'll just bin the lot and order again else where.

Don't bake Amy finished product.

I have read so many conflicting views on baking or not baking the finished product. Can I ask why you think it shouldn't be done? Thanks
Interestingly there's a youtube (Asian pharma I believe) where they seem to autoclave vials after filling and crimping.
They used a pharma clean room and equipment.

Yea depending on what compound it was that I was brewing, I've thrown filtered and capped gear in my autoclave a ton of times. I choose the liquid cycle and had no problems at all. Nothing's ever exploded in my autoclave. This will obviously do nothing for removing any possible sediment in the gear, but filtering through a 0.20um filter obviously is where my money stands as far as taking care of sterilizing goes... I pretty much did it because I could.. that's all.

Now as far as non-sterile filters go, I use 47mm Millipore, 0.20 and 0.45 micron PTFE non-sterile membrane filters, and this was a big question of mine as well. I finally got it answered by contacting Millipore and they told me autoclaving the filter paper prior to use was my answer. I took the filter papers individually, placed them in foil, and autoclaved. My clave has a dry cycle at the end of each cycle so they come out dry but that's not the case for everyone. Besides autoclaving, they sell individually sealed sterile filter papers as well. This, of course is if you use a buchner filtration system.

Is it necessary to autoclave the filter papers? Well they recommend it if you want sterile paper, but to be honest, I've also used them without autoclaving them and nothing at all has happened obviously. I know that may sound crazy to some, but I've also been told by a very merittable source that it wasn't necessary to do so, once passed through the filter, the gear should be sterile. But what if there is bacteria on the bottom side of the filter right? That's why I choose to clave the papers anyhow. Can't hurt right?

Hey everyone, I'm literally about to have a bash at a home brew for the first time until I came a across a sudden issue yesterday. The whatman syringe filters have arrived all lose in one bag. The seller now tells me they were made in a clean environment but are not sterile. Is there a know way to sterilise these? Or should I just chuck them and order new ones which I know are actually sterile? Cheers
A non-sterile filters can be used, seem to work good enough.
B you can run a little alcohol, either BA or ethyl alcohol thru filters, then discard the first ml of oil that comes out the filter from the syringe, as they will have excess oil.

You can use metal syringes.
Eyeball vials to fill them.

They flame me at meso for flaming lab gear lol, but it works nicely.
As long as flaming doesn't leave too much burnt residues, it is cheap and effective sterilizing.
Obviously not for plastics or flammable equipment.

I've seen some big-pharma equipment
with stainless-steel (or perhaps made from Nickel plated steel as they look quite shiny) filter housings
they just replace filter sheets by unscrewing them open
and sterilize the steel housings.

Filter membranes come in a small box.
Not sure if they are sterile though.

Your stupidity is beyond words. Pretty soon new words will need to be made to describe you

Just fyi, your 50ml syringe doesn't need to be sterile as you'll be drawing in unsterile product anyway. Only matters what it touches once it exits the syringe filter.

Oh fuck yeah! I never thought of it that way, makes total sense. Right well I'm literally going to go and brew my first batch then. Thanks all!!!

thats beyound a retarded statement..... no it will not ensure it is steril...
OP get new ones SEALED in a STERILE PACKET!

the exit end will not be sterile and compromised just like the entrance area. what logic are you using?

Yeah I decided I'd rather be safe than sorry so that's what I did, had a box of individual sterile filters arrive a couple of days ago. Thanks

Silver plated? Lol. Keep trying, maybe you'll get one right one day. until then you can sleep well at night knowing Darwin will eventually clear you from the gene pool.
