Does it make me a prick if I dont let people "Work in" with me while im using equipment?

Lately because of limited time I try to do my sets fast in the gym and avoid socializing too much. I never minded having people work in with me but taking the weights on and off just makes it too long. So yesterday some chick walks up to me while im doing deadlifts and asks if she can work in with me. I told her ill be done in about 5 minutes and the rack is all hers so she made a face and walked off. Was I an asshole for doing that?

Come on let a lady work in with you, you meanie lol.

I feel it is better to allow people to work in with you as long as they don't hinder you and even helping you change the plates.

If I'm doing supersets I definitely don't expect exclusive use of all the equipment I'm on. But I don't take long breaks between my sets, and mostly do one exercise at a time. If someone wants to "work in" after I've started, they need to take off the plates I'm using and put them back after their set. And be quick smart about it, otherwise I will be standing over them tapping my foot.

Stfu mindless fuck....nobody gives a shit about your opinion... @Desibaba fuck what they think or say. Their not signing our checks or puttin food in our kids mouths. They can with their turn an if they dont like me for it will they can stand the hell in line cuz im not here to please them. This isn't any fuckin brgerking that ive ever heard of. They dont get it their way....they take it our way or they dont get the fuckin thing lmfao. No worries bro....your not a dick just a busy man with limited time on his hands

Deadlifts is different, lot of loading and unloading assuming your strength is way over hers.

Cables, machines and DBs are a different story. If someone said no to me I'd work in anyway and make them feel uncomfortable, and I've done that before.

This!

Switching plates is a real problem nuisance, especially with DL. If she's cute.... maybe exceptions can be made.

The stuff JC mentions above is where I let people in, and expect to be let in - especially fairly non-sweaty activities like calf raises, pull-ups. I wouldn't ask in seated machines because I'm soaked when I work out.

A membership gives u access to all the same equipment their using or your using. Its simply courtesy that is involved after that. There is no rule you cant say NO and their is no rule you cant work in. Its simply courtesy whether you provide it or not. That said if im using free weights the person asking to work in ought to be of comparable strength. I WILL NOT unload after each set. You will wait.

Cables, stations or machines is another story. Really no reason to say no. But truth be told if i wanna hold it down im just gonna sit on it with my ear buds in. What are they gonna do? Take my earbuds out to say some thing to me? Coming grabbing at my head and that becomes assault and i WILL defend myself.

So this happened a few weeks ago man, fuckin hilarious right. I asked this kid if I could work in please on a cable machine. We have a friendly gym, I was expecting him to say yes. He says no! "I would rather work by myself" in this French accent. So obviously I grab the handle and put up the weight stack and say to him "you're not using it right now".

After about 6 reps just flips out and screams at me "FIIIINE, YOU CAN USE IIIIIT!" in this crazy French accent, and literally RUNS out of the room.

Funniest thing I've ever heard in a long time!

I think we have alot of great answers here, 5 minutes is fine for a rack to wait. Noone should mind that. easy switched things like machines should alwasy be shared as a simple 30 sec set and a pin change wont affect a workout. Hell another person is alwasy great for motivation

Right on. I don't mind anyone jumping in if they're on the same weighs. It's actually cool.

But if a chick wants to jump in with me, I'd pack up and head home in a ball of shame.

You've met CDNGuy!

I never let anyone work in with me. I don't think it's being an asshole, it's just being there for a simple purpose and wanting to get everything done as soon as possible.

The way I see it. If you can lift the same amount of weight, for the same amount of reps and sets in half the amount of time. Then why sit there all day just to be "The Nice Guy"?
