All you computer tech nerds need help.

No offense to anyone of you I wish I knew shit about computers. Here's my delim. I have a 27" iMac that Is a 2008. I bought It from someone years ago and it's been great. Lately it's acting crazy and been progressively getting slower. It only lets me read saved word docs and other programs. I use this for my business and home computer. It absolutely does everything I need it to. But I feel it's just making things harder for me to do and run certain programs due to its age. I know in the tech world this thing is an absolute dinosaur. Should I pay someone to update it and clean it out or whatever to make it current? Or give it to my kid to use for casual Internet and homework and go buy a brand new one? Any suggestions I would appreciate.

Thanks

Well it depends on what you're looking for.

1.) Do you want to stay with apple?

2.) What are you planning on doing with it? Just word documents, forum posting, and porn?

3.)Let's see them specs.

3.a) You might be able to upgrade simple shit like RAM and your HDD/SSD.

4.) If you decide to upgrade you can get a PC for 1/3 maybe even 1/4 the price for the same build.

And it will last about 1/3 maybe even 1/4 of the time. Damn sure won't make it 9 years like the Mac.

Meh, I guess that's true if you're talking about people who don't know shit about computers, which I suppose is OP.

But a pc will last just as long and is easily upgradable to keep up to date.

Key word is upgradable. I don't wanna work on my computer, I wanna use it. I get what you're saying and my boys love building them, just not for me. I'm not a patient fella.

I mean, it depends on your needs. If your kids are gaming and shit then they'll probably want a new GPU every 3 or so years. That's a quick plug and play. Easier than pinning your own glutes.

Every 5 years you might want a new CPU/Mobo.

If you're just looking at porn you get a new PC from scratch once every 5 years. Again for 1/3 or 1/4 the price.

I love how fluid the macs seem to be but I've never been able to pull the trigger on them when you look at the prices between the products.

But I'm not trying to make this a pc vs mac debate so to each their own.

Either way, I'll wait for OP's answers.

I agree with both @RobertL and @Heynow

I have friends who tell me the same thing. Man just build one it's cheaper and you can make it bad ass! But also I'm a apple guy/family. I guess it's a comfort thing that all our shit works together and I don't need to do anything extra. About a year ago I purchased the big dog top of the line HP with the big ass curved screen. After 3 days of downloading apps just so I could use quick books and word I boxed that bitch back up and out my iMac back to use. I've owned many computers in my life but never one this long and I've literally never had a problem with this one that restarting didn't solve.

No porn
Mainly work for invoices and emails and company docs.
Internet cruising
I need a fast computer my attention span is about as long as ... Wait what was I talking about lol J/K

Lots of memory due to thousands of files I keep.

I would probably buy a new one. I mean, it lasted almost 10 years it's almost not worth the money to fix now. You can upgrade by a few years. Or get something from a few years ago. Even to a mac guy I would never buy top of the line tech.

PC/Mac/doesn't matter what else. Tech moves too quick. Bang for buck is always a generation behind. Especially for your needs.

What do you use your computer for?what kind of work?

Ok nvm I just read the thread.

You could get a laptop that would be sufficient for all your needs and wouldn’t be slow. Those chromebooks are cheap and can do admistrative tasks. Macs are a little more expensive. If not chromebook you could still get a decent laptop for a couple hundred bucks

I already have a mac book pro. I really need a desk top. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Don't think there was a 2008 iMac. This site can ID the machine: Identify your iMac. Most likely, it's a 2009 and can have a range of CPUs, the most common a (very slow) Intel Core 2 Duo.

Get a cheap PC with dual monitors and start working on moving your work over to that as time allows. Toss the Mac when you can go a month without using it.
