So my gf just cancelled her insurance with work cause they were charging her way to much. Now if she gets insurance outside like blue Cross or shield she won't have to.pay a penalty right?
I'm confused on the whole thing for her right now. I'm confused as well cause every time I google something the I do contradicts itself.
Can anyone give me a definitive answer? Any info will including where to find the info. Thanks.

You need qualifying healthcare for a majority of the year typically.

In Massachusetts anyway....

Are you referring to insurance outside of her place of employment?

Shouldn't have to pay a penalty in that case... But, I can't imagine it would be any cheaper.

I believe the penalties are still in effect though if you have no insurance at all. I still had to complete a census recently to confirm employees are under a policy.

You still will have to pay the penalty this year only as from 2019 on it has been dropped. The best thing is for your GF to get a replacement policy immediately to avoid the penalty.

@Eman ya I'm sorry. That's what I meant.
Her job was billing her $230 a month and she got the same shit I did for less then half that.
Mindless, I saw it started 2019 but wasn't sure. Again, everyone posts different shit. Being at me so makes me think every time I read something now "Does this webpage written have an agenda? Is there advertisement here? Or is it just a bunch of non sense?"
Thanks guys.
Anyone of you know how the penalties are rated? I got one for $600 which was fine by me cause that would be like $40 a month instead of insurance for $200! Gf makes just over 31k a year. She's afraid of a 2k penalty(max).

I believe the penalty is prorated based on how many months without coverage. Of course there's no penalty if covered the whole year. One year when I was between jobs I paid a $260 penalty for having no coverage for 7 months, so it sounds like it is prorated based on that.

In 2019 I still am mandated to carry a policy. State law, started by Mitt Romney I believe. A Republican.

I'm really stoned rn so please don't take my word for it, might not have been Romney. :D

$230 a month is pretty cheap.

Is it an HSA? Any employer contribution?

A lot of people blame politics for the costs, and rightfully so, but employers tend to be notoriously cheap with contributions...

Ya her job ain't paying much like they said they would. Last 2 jobs I had paid the large majority of it. This is a new company she's working for if that matters any.

What I don't get is it says right in the Constitution that the state can not be stricter then the government laws but can be leaner on laws. Fucking politics now a days. It sucks.

Federally there is no longer a penalty for not having health insurance anymore(Trump got rid of it). Like Ickyrica pointed out, states vary though.

@TRT as I understand it, when she does her income taxes for 2018, she will be asked to state any months out of the year that she was not covered. Its approaching the end of May, so she still has time to get covered within this month- thus, she is still technically covered. If not, there is an amount she would have to pay as a fine. Now, if this has changed for 2018 going into 2019, I am completely unaware of it.

We have had this law in place for well over a decade now. Politicians do what they want, only way to influence real change is through physical means. Without that things will never change. Viva la revolution

Taxes? That reminds me. Haven't filed in a number of years. If i keep blowing it off, what will they do?

Garnish me into the poor house or send some jackboot thugs?

I had an employee that found out the hard way.

First, they will freeze your bank accounts and all lines of credit.

Then they will send a wage garnishment order to your employer and, in his case, garnish 100% of his earnings.

When you suddenly have no access to your money and you're essentially working for free, it tends to get your attention.

Then, you have to hire a tax lawyer just to get the wage garnishment order reduced from 100% to maybe 80-90%... Then you pay the lawyer.

He went from making around $1500 a week net, to taking home about $300-400. That went on for years until he had paid it back... Not to mention the dozens of times he had to go to the tax office.

Moral of the story: go to an accountant and get ahead of it before they get ahead of you. The longer you think you are getting away with it, the worse it is when they get around to you...

Im in a somewhat similar situation, however, in my case its unpaid student loans. I lose 15% every check. I couldnt even grasp the idea of 80, 90, and 100%. I would give up at that point...

Are they federal student loans? You do have a little bit of leeway with those if they're not federal, but I think they're not as hardcore even with the fed. I just paid mine off right before filing taxes this year.

The thing with the employee was rough... It was the equivalent of watching the government bend a guy over and fuck him in public sans lube. I didn't think that kind of shit really went down... I was very wrong.

The crazy part was, his son worked there as well and basically did the same shit. I could post pages of shit they attempted, and failed, to get away with.
