i assume u could work with both but realistically would mass and strength suffer from using machine ohp over dumbell

Awesome thanksI think they were a couple of studies that supported that pretty much any dumbbell variation is much better when it comes to muscles activation for shoulders. Here is the one I recall [1].
The main caveat of using dumbbells is that there will most definitely be a cap of how much you lift, instead, increasing the weight with barbells is a fair bit easier. From a hypertrophic perspective though the 'caveat' of dumbbells could easily be addressed by volume manipulation.
