A more recent study examined the response to increasing doses (20 mg, 40 mg and 80 mg) of Oxandrolone in 262 male patients with HIV. The drug was administered for a period of 12 weeks. The group taking 20 mg of Oxandrolone per day showed no statistically significant hepatotoxicity trends by examining liver enzyme values (AST / ALT; amino-transferase and alanine amino-transferase). Men taking 40 mg experienced an average increase of about 30-50% in liver enzyme values, while the group of men taking 80 mg experienced an increase of about 50-100%. Approximately 10-11% of patients in the group taking 40 mg of Oxandrolone experienced a level of liver toxicity of the III and IV degree of toxicity based on the AST and ALT values according to the World Health Organization guidelines. This figure rose to 15% in the group taking 80 mg of Oxandrolone. While severe hepatotoxicity cannot be excluded with Oxandrolone, these studies suggest that this molecule provides a greater safety margin than other C-17 methylated agents. (9) The use of adequate hepatoprotection during the use of this molecule is however recommended.”
