What kind of car to get?

I drive a mercedes c class and absolutely love it. That being said, I purchased it a few years ago when I valued peoples perception rather than my own economic wellbeing. If I were to do it over, I'd purchase something under 3k and put the rest into investments and towards my future goals.

Drove a 2005 impala for 7 years and it was incredibly reliable FWIW.

I am a huge fan of low reving diesels. Only reason I mentioned the Mercedes. The cost of maintenance is so low and when you can get 600 000 km out of them... now I built a 06 f250 with a manual transmission and all the emission garbage removed. My Chevy trucks have all lasted more than 400,000, the 2014 I bought new has had the highest cost of ownership

Didn’t read all replies.

If this is for commuting, you can grab a 70-100k mile BMW 3 series (e9x) for that money. Comfortable. Reliable. Should hold value well.

I dont like the odds on cars. Thats just my view. Unitbody and designed to be used and thrown away.

Id bet the farm a chevy, ford or dodge v8 truck will outlast any goddam mother fuckin thing. There has been 8 or 9 chevy and ford v8 trucks that have been verified with 1,000,000 miles on them. One is still up in MI delivering seafood daily. Its 91 chevy 350. Had 1,000,000 put on the original timing chain before inspection by officials. Has to have more than double that now.

Thats what we do in America. Build the best trucks. Always have always will. And i would bet anything on it. Problem most folks have is they dont maintain em. If your handy with a wrench its alot cheaper.

If you had 8 grand to throw at a car what would you get? Injuring minds and all
A tahoe with some 200k on the clock fits the bill. I really cant think of a better bet with that high a mileage. Any american SUV thats built on a ladder frame and has a v8. Or any pickup thats v8 and american made.

I have a tahoe as one of my vehicles. They hold up real well. Its beautiful its an 06. I plan on putting 500k at least on it. Half of those miles will be boosted even. The only weak spot on a tahoe is the 4l60e. Its not known for its strengths but usually good for 200k or more under street conditions

Our 2004 just got a totally rebuilt front end for Christmas. New control arms, tie rods, wheel hubs, CVs, shocks, sway bar link, torsion keys, calipers, rotors and pads, pitman arm, idler arm and bracket. Rear calipers and breaks are totally new as well, as the break lines that feed them. 128000 on the clock. She rides perfect.

My cousin has one of those early 90 Chevy 1500's pushing 300k miles. It's got the 4.3 V6, but from what I understand that's basically a 350 V8 minus two cylinders. Towing power sucks though.

Like an old S10 with the bigger motor, I had one about 15 years ago when I was a cable guy. It did great for what it was. Only issue I had with it was a sticky t stat

Gm uses the same platform across displacement changes. The 4.8 is the same as a 5.3 but shorter stroke and flat top pistons. The 6.0 is the same as a 5.3 just more cubes. The 6.2 same deal. Just intakes change and some other things. The difference between the famed LS vs the vortecs(and most ppl think their the same but not so) is aluminum blocks, shorter intakes to fit in a sports car, dry sumps, pistons etc but the displacement is similar. Thats why LS swaps are popular in everything from toyotas to project vehicles. Because their easy to find since their all the same and cost also because theirs so many of them. And most LS performance parts are direct bolt ons to the vortec line. Which makes any GM v8 a hot rodders dream and has been the preferred platform for hot rodders everywhere for over 70 yrs

Depends on the goals.

Fun/practical/reliable pick 2
Fun/practical - 2007 Subaru WRX
Fun/reliable - 350z, Miata
Practical/reliable - Honda Accord
Wound up with a Subaru Impreza '12. Got it for 8k. Mostly for commuting. I'm looking for a 05 Chevy Silverado with issues I can swap my motor, tranny, and rear end into. Needs to be cheap.

Not a bad choice at all.

google row52, it's a junkyard search website. It's been an absolute life saver with some of my projects in the past.
