Shitbox drivers?

Yes, very good trucks. I've always been partial to Ford trucks myself but no denying those Z71's aren't some damn nice rides!! Honestly nowadays I could take one or the other and even dodge has stepped their truck game up big time lately.

Now, I understand trucks cost money, but one thing I cannot stand is paying more money for a cheaper constructed vehicle. I'm no mechanic , but many of these trucks are higher in price and cheaper in production lately, Ford trucks probably being at the top of the list now
I’m not partial to any truck either. It’s all about maintenance in my opinion. I understand a lemon will pop out of the assembly line from time to time but in my opinion they all make good vehicles if you take care of them.

Wife drives that Yukon and I have an 02' Ford Ranger that has honestly been my favorite truck ever, and that is even comparing the F150's and 250 turbo diesel I had several yrs back. It's simple, I can fit 3 dirtbikes in the bed, plus a cooler, plus a gas can and bike stand (it took me a minute to come up with this system! Lol)

Only thing I'll probably add to it is a roof rack for luggage, since extended cab offers little for way of gear on top of all our riding gear, boots, helmets, etc. I wish smaller trucks were still produced, new ranger is 48k and size of a full sized truck! I think I like the smaller ranger because I've amazed myself at just how much shit I can pack into it! I took a load of bricks to the landfill a cop weeks ago and I swear I had about 5k lbs of brick in the bed of that truck. I was just driving down the road like ,"yes that's right, YOU ARE A GOOD TRUCK, don't let em talk shit abt you!!" Lol

I had the opportunity to drive a Toyota Tacoma. 4wd. Extended cab. Kinda small but a damn good truck. Never a problem with it. That’s my next purchase. Would already own one but you can’t find a used one. That’s a great thing!

Just curious to see if anyone out there is a odd bird like me in this way. I make plenty of money my career is set and I'm at the upper end of my field as far as money and skill lwver are concerned but I hate making high payments on anything period. I can afford a new car and my wife drives a newer CRV cause she absolutely loves tha damned things but I put enough cash down to keep our payments below $180 month.

I myself have 3 different cars I alternate between and their combined age is 77 years old lol. One is a 1984 ramcharger that I dont consider to be a shitbox and more of a toy and my favorite car I've owned aside from the 1986 ramcharger I had in my teens and 20s.

But I own a old ass saturn sl2 that I love and it's my third that I've owned in the exact same color, package and condition. I treat it like gold and bought it from an estate sale from a daughter of an old lady that passed away with 78k on it for $1200 and it's now over 113k and I've done nothing but put a tire on it and change the oil, I call that winning lol

And then I got a old tahoe that is my 4x4 tow vehicle that has well over 300k on it and I use it extensively and even towed that heavy ass ramcharger )4500lbs + 2000lb double axle trailer) with it across 3 states for 6 hours during severe thunderstorms across the south and it didnt have the slightest issue a d I was not worried about the tahoe one bit. I bought it for $2800 and have done nothing but changed the oil and a power steering hose since I bought it a couple years ago.

Guys at work always bust my balls about my rides and my wife refuses to ride in any of them lol. But I look at some guys I work with making a $1000 a month payment for a dodge Cummins or $700 for a new Silverado and I think for what? Too look cool and pay a mortgage payment to get back and forth to work? I can think of a thousand other things I'd rather spend that money on and do.

Is anyone else like me rolling around with a smile on their faces with a fat wallet not giving a shit about what people think of them when they step out of a $1000 car at the gym or gas station?
Yeah i raised kids early and was broke thru all my 20s. Add in the fact i would make risky financial decisions and i ended up at chapter 7 when i was 28. Had a damn good start at life too. Bought my first home at 21. Lost that mfer at 28 lol. The biggest mistake i made with money was balancing a ton of debt on my income. Really no different than most ppl. But that shit will get you in trouble. First wave that comes in your house of sand comes crashing down. I still remember it like yesterday. The moment you realize you dont actually own shit. They come and take it all back. It was a process of self reflection after that. I needed to learn from my mistakes. I was unemployed for a large portion of 09 and sat home and watched the Yankees win the world series(i fuckin hate baseball. Its boring). Watched every stupid game. I also picked up Dave Ramsey and it was the greatest gift financially speaking i ever received.

I own my 08 f150 and my 06 Tahoe. Both meticulously maintained. I intend to take em as far as i can before it becomes a losing battle. Im good with a wrench and that helps. What i dont know i can learn. Alot of mods on both. Both are obviously owned outright. I also own an 18 mustang gt i bought new and in cash in 18. I have a boat and a four wheeler i own in cash. Just bought my first Texas home and im gonna turn that cunt in to an 8yr pymt plan with all the savings we put away. These days its all about being as conservative as possible with investments. 180° different than when i was in my 20s. I realize now playing this game like EVERYONE else is gonna yield results like EVERYONE else. Meaning doing broke things leads to being broke. And only a fool pays 800/mth for a depreciating asset over 6 yrs. Then what happens when its paid? Why of course reup on another new note! The American way! No thanks ive checked out of that mentality permanently. Youd really be suprised how much wealth you can generate by paying yourself like your paying bills. And what i once thought was alot of money really isnt shit any more. Funny how that works. I can save it with the best of em but when it comes time to spend it i dont shy from that either. Except now i dont ask a bank for help. And i pay with what i have and get exactly what i need and some times exactly what i want. Its a much more mature position on which to make decisions. And its harder to part with 60k for a new truck if its 60k in lump on my end vs some complicated schedule that favors the bank over 6yrs and keeps you in the poor house. It means more and you more inclined to act like it!

It would really depend IMHO

I have a friend that by looking at his mileage on his diesels... you would think hes a long haul trucker.

But his commute and material.hauling is crazy, he is constantly fixing vehicles due to wear and tear, I've finally convinced him to LEASE a new vehicle and swap it annually..

He makes solid money and is bleeding out through vehicles.

Personally, I ride these bitches till they die

Im not a GM or anything. Im sure there are some in here that deal in cars that could shed some light. In my area im seeing 399/mth on a 2020 F150. No payments for a year then its 399/mth for 3 yrs AFTER the first yr free. This is a fleece. Im willing to bet that 399 is still a profit for the dealer because it doesnt make any sense to me a GM would let a new truck walk w/o making a profit off the customer. Which tells me that that typically 45k truck is REALLY only worth some thing LESS than 399/mth. So essentially your paying their bills on that truck for 4 yrs. Then they get it back and resell it when the lease is over. They made profit off it twice. And maybe a third if it gets traded in again. I know used vehicles are huge profit makers for dealers. Some times even more than a new vehicle.

What does the customer get out of it? A new vehicle for 4 yrs and then facing a buyout if they wish to keep it. Which 100% of the time is absurd and way over priced. So you made payments for 4 yrs and have nothing in the end. Then the only realistic option is to avoid the buyout(because its stupid) and enter a new lease or maybe buy a new vehicle on payments. A perpetual motion of constant payments. Which is compounding because its also money your not saving. A fleece IMO is a scheme entirely setup to keep you poor and dependent and keep the dealer making profits.

What attracts the customer is the maintenance included in the lease. Some of these vehicles are downright ridiculous on maintenance and the manufacturers are making it very difficult to go to advance auto parts and simply replace a tail light now. It's gotten so stupid that many dealers have car wash machines that a lease customer can bring the vehicle in just for a wash, lol. They are selling leases by putting fear in ppl, that somehow if you have something happen you are too stupid to figure out how to fix it and move on. Roadside assistance, bumper to bumper, blah blah blah. But here is the worst part....so you get in a 3 or 4 year lease and let's say you are at the option to either turn in or buy. You buy it, and you just went out of the warranty and many times there is some 50k mile service that costs an arm and a leg and you still have to pay another 20k to buy the fucking remainder of the vehicle!!! This is precisely the reason you see so many "high end cars" like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, right around 60k-80k miles and you are like ,"why are they only asking 6 grand for that car?" Hahahhaha, it's because the seller knows what he is abt to get shafted with and wants to pass the buck. BMW= big money wannabe

Basically the thought process put on customers who lease is ,"we understand, you are too busy making money to make monthly payments to worry about maintenance and washing your car and shit like that, keep working 100 hours a fucking week so you can "stay safe and secure" Hahhaha, fucking joke!! Been there and done it, have more respect for a real motherfucker with cash in his hands

Well I should mention that what prompted me to write this was the first semi major repair I've had to ever do on the Tahoe. Changed the knock sensors and had to fix a major vacuum leak due to a bad gasket on the intake manifold. And of course the two bolts on the EGR where it pulls from the exhaust broke. But I'm a bad ass machinist with bad ass toys at my disposal so I just removed the manifold and took it to work and fixed it right the first time.

Dunno if you finished the job already, but I always add a tiny bit of rtv to my gaskets that have vacuum/boost. Just good insurance imho, but gasket without rtv will do just fine if the surfaces are scratch free and flat.

Fuck this thread has me rethinking my shit. Currently living with a $2,000/mo SUV payment and a $1,000/mo truck payment. Fortunately the RV and all the other vehicles are paid for, but it is stupid. Like I gotta make $70,000/yr pre tax just to cover payments, insurance, gas, and upkeep...

Fuck all that. Sell the SUV and the truck. Pay cash for something. Save up some money and buy something nicer with all the money your saving

Proof that greed and stupidity go hand in hand.

Unfortunately I didnt take any pics of the prep or any middle progress steps. I rtv'd the knock sensors but I stayed away from using it on the manifold gaskets.

I prepped all machined surfaces thoroughly and placed the intake manifold itself in the mill at work and did a light skim pass with a fly cutter over the gasket surfaces to deck the mating surface 100% true again.

It started right up first turn and after a rough idle for about 5 seconds it leaned out and ran like a top. Had it out last night and the motor felt much fresher than it had been before I replaced all gaskets. It's amazing how much performance loss I had just from a vacuum leak in the manifold but since it was a slow failure I guess I just slowly got used to it without noticing how big of a drop off in power I was dealing with.

...some fairly large assumptions here but it’s the interwebs after all. How about this, I know better but I got sucked in to a couple new models. Current plan is to keep them indefinitely. Really it’s the only way once you’ve done it. Just plan on running them till the wheels fall off. Regardless, this thread is filled with people SAVING money on vehicles and that’s a good thing. Shit, my dad just bought a $1200 Ford Escape, put about $800 into it, and he’ll have a 2 year driver. Could be afford more? Yup, but he likes saving money. Good for him. Good for all you guys. I’ll find the economy in what I’m doing too - Keeping these damn things. Good News is my truck’s paid off this spring. I jacked my payment so it was done in 3 years. The SUV, well that’s a different story. I’ll turn that one into a $3000/mo payment in the spring and finish it up in 3 more.

Ah, i see. It seemed like a troll post. Cuz i couldnt imagine anyone financing $150k+ on monthly payments or having a revolving 36k/yr in vehicle payments. You can see how this looks? If the individual has that sort of money to piss away on crappy investments they certainly have enough money to buy em outright with a lil discipline.
