Help understanding my fitness pal

Currently trying to lose some pounds so I’ve been tracking my food. I’ve been wearing my Fitbit also to keep up with my activities throughout the day. My question is, this shows I’ve burned more than I’ve eaten for the day, so do I increase my intake or should I not pay much attention to how many calories is shows me burning throughout the day?

It's just an estimate based on their algorithms.

Ideally what you would do is stick to a caloric allotment for one week and weigh yourself before and after. If the loss on the scale is within the range you are hoping for, stick to it.

Bodyweight fluctutes a lot so it is entirely possible one week isn't enough to have a proper estimate, so give it 2-3 weeks before fine tuning.

Honestly the scale hasn’t really moved in about a month. That’s why I went back to using these apps to make sure I wasn’t messing up on my cals. I’m going to stick with it a little bit longer before trying something different. I can’t really decrease my cals much more and still function.

Check your Fitbit and see what it puts you at for average calories a day. I've found Fitbits to be pretty accurate on calories.

Subtract 500 from that average and enter that number into MyFitnessPal, ditch the exercise portion... it makes it more difficult than it needs to be.

Be sure to be consistent with when you weigh yourself. You can easily fluctuate by up to 5lbs in one day depending on what you eat.

If the scale hasn't budged in a month, that is a pretty good indicator that perhaps you are eating more than you think you are. I'd try cutting 300cals a day and aim for more satiating foods, and reevaluate in 2-3 weeks.

Finally, the scale doesn't always tell the full story. Your weight may not have budged weight, but how do you look? Sometimes the mirror is a better friend than the scale.

As far as calories out on Fitbit? I can’t seem to figure out how to input anything into their system.

You’re right, I may be. But this is what I usually eat and have no problem dropping the pounds. I’ll give it till the first of the month and if nothing changes still I’ll definitely reevaluate my diet. I’ll post my daily intake and see what y’all think also.

You shouldn't need to really input much...? Just wear it and sync it to the app.

It should be telling you your daily calories burned. Take your average number for 1-2 weeks and figure that as your baseline. Subtract 500 to go into a deficit.

So take the info I have highlighted and subtract from that, correct?

Right. I can already see the issue with the last two posts you made. That exercise section on MFP is clearly incorrect.

I don't know where the data from the exercise portion of MyFitnessPal is getting pulled from but you need to eliminate that entirely. It's putting your baseline at 4800cal where Fitbit is putting you around 3000ish on average.

I'm guessing a 500cal deficit for you is about 2800cal. If you stick with that you should see a modest drop within the next 1-2wks.

No I just don’t wear it much. I’m trying to make a habit of it now.

Gotcha. I'd wear it 24/7 to get decent calorie metrics, then take the average for the last 7 days and use that number.

If you have a day you're well above average, that can be cheat meal day.
