I would rather have a Dr who's only after $, than some idiot who's emotional thinking he's doing it for "good".One thing is for certain, he needs to question his future career choice.
If you suffer from depression and can't see that a relationship lost is no big deal at all, then he shouldn't become a Nurse Anesthetist as that is a pressure cooker of a job that only the most calm and focused individuals should do.
Having worked healthcare for 25 years before I left I was around NA's all the time helping them with collecting spinal fluid that I would later do all the testing on, arterial lines, IV's on extremely difficult patients from newborns to elderly.
If you come to work depressed without a total focus on what you're doing you will be loathed in a setting where you really are the end of the line and are expected to pull off the impossible over and over all day long year round.
Forget women if you are serious about your career, love is a silly emotion and causes you to lose your grasp on reality. I'm not here to tell you that you have to make lots of money in life to be happy and that buying things is gonna fill the void because that won't lead to long term happiness either as I found out when I approached middle age and was sitting on a pile of cash and investments and walked away from everything(getting rid of most all of my possessions except my cash and investments) and found myself much more happy and lighter on my feet without having to drag a bunch of shit around with me anymore.
Philosophers have dealt with this issue of feeling lost and uncertain for thousands of years. There are no objective universal answer. You gotta be honest and don't just do something because those options are available, a philosopher would call it living in bad faith if you just choose something like being an NA because it's and option that is available instead of choosing something that is more authentic to your own desires.
Over those 25 years I spent working in labs I worked with 6 doctors that killed themselves through all means of suicide from drug overdose to blowing their brains out. Many people think just because you have this great career that you're on top of the world, and that's total bullshit that is sold to people in a capitalist society that thinks money and power is everything and solves all problems.
I can remember when I was in college in a lot of pre-med courses with guys that went on to medschool and you would be surprised the number that were only interested in making money, no mention of a true desire to be a doctor, they wanted to make as much money as possible. That's scary if you ask me and someone has poisoned us with these ideas that money is the only goal in life. I can tell you at the certain point where you have enough cash to insulate you from life's ups and downs, money is just money it doesn't mean jack shit, just like relationships end up being baggage as well. At the end of the day you only have you and your own mind, that's all there is and all there ever will be.
