2020...Coronavirus and beyond log

This is what my training partners are telling me. We have those at the gym but who knows when I’ll be back in there. Now personally I like the SSB front squats , much more comfortable. I actually like the shoulder challenge front squats present. If you can stabilize the bar it forces a really tight core, I cannot see achieving this with the harness.

Even with the harness you have to have a tight core or you'll spill it. Never noticed any issues with it. For me my mobility and ability to keep any real weight up limited my front squat to low 300's. A few months with the harness and I hit 405lbs.

I’ll have to give it a shot. If so many people speak highly of it, it must be for a good reason.

Realized i totally forgot to post this day. Had it saved in my notes but forgot to post.

Damn, 555x10 I would love it for 1 lol

With the initial post do you mean you've only trained for 6 years and hit those numbers? That's some damn good genetics if so man. This will be another fun thread to follow :)

yes, started training in late 2013 so coming up on 7 years. I guess, im just built to deadlift. I actually didnt start squatting until 2015. Guys i started training with never did them. They all laid concrete so they said they couldn't afford to get fucked up in the gym lol

Found out this morning the director of my first strongman comp decided to continue on with the comp. The Govenor hasnt even said if the executive order will end on May 15th yet (he is supposed to sometime today) so if gyms open up ill have exactly 4 weeks.

Events are:
VIKING PRESS (max reps in 60secs)
AXLE BAR DEADLIFT (max reps in 60secs)
STONE OVER BAR (max reps in 60secs)
MEDLEY – Yolk walk – Husefell Stone – Keg
MYSTERY EVENT

Im excited, but also think its bullshit of him to not at least push it back a few weeks. Only event i havent ever trained is Stones and husefell(big metal box shaped like an old coffin that is loadable with plates) . @Eman if i recall you poured some of your own stones? any tips?

I did pour one... I used plastic light globes, I can dig up a link for them if you're interested. If I was going to pour multiple ones, I think I'd buy the Slater style and go with a bigger diameter... Then you can add weight and stuff to them and have a nice variety. The one I made is slightly smaller diameter and I would have liked a bigger size just to train that aspect of the lift.

Mine turned out pretty nice, I was happy with it. Only tips I really have are to keep the cement on the thinner side and use a mallet to beat the hell out of it. You can also use a power tool up against the mold to let the vibration work on it but I think mine turned out well because I spent some time just knocking it over and over again.

Other than that, it's really not too tricky. I was looking at molds the other day actually... There's a competition near me at the end of the year that I was looking at... All the events and weights looked pretty conservative for me and not hard to train. I really wish those stones of steel were more reasonable in price... I'd love one of those.

Yeah watched some videos and seems easy, im just not going to have enough time before comp to order and pour one. 4 weeks out. couple gyms close by have them, so im going to have to check and see if they are going to open up and open for day passes. Need stone and yoke practice.

any tips and actually doing the stones to a platform? I dont know the weight yet, but its max reps in 60 secs to a 50" platform. im a hair over 6'3 so platform height shouldnt be an issue at all for me, thats probably just above my belly button lol

GOT A FIRE LIT UNDER MY ASS YESTERDAY
i found the promoter for the comp on IG, he posted a story on his page about his new gym on the west side of town opening. In the video he also said his gym on the east side had been open the entire time to all members that felt safe coming.

Which now i understand why he didnt push the comp back. His guys and girls competing had been preparing for it. This pissed me off, and i could back out given the circumstances, but ill just win the Middleweight class and talk a bunch of shit. lol

Gym opened up today.
BW 233.1 so i need to maintain this to hit the 231.5 cut off.

Alot of pressing volume under the circumstances. Triceps were gassed by the time i get to close grip. Squats felt alright, not great, but frequency has been fairly high so its to be expected. For NEUTRAL grip i put a football bar on top of the squat rack and just did all 3 grip widths twice. FELT GREAT TO BE BACK IN THE GYM.

any tips and actually doing the stones to a platform?

Get a closer to the platform than you're expecting you'll need to be. I suspect the stone will be lighter since it's max rep though so you might not be to worry about being ultra strict.

Centering your body over the stone is also helpful, it'll want to roll one way or the other if you aren't in the perfect pickup position.

Helped me to think of driving my hips.

Other than that, I was surprised how naturally that movement came. I think that's why it's uncommon to get injured doing those, it's not as technical as it looks. Neversate has a great stone tutorial.

I don't know if you have any yoke experience yet but that is definitely the implement I struggle with the most. It is seriously a humbling experience every single time.

WEEK 3 DAY 3
was still sore from the sessions earlier this week. had a bro session, nothing really notable. pushed the sled around some and bro'd out

WEEK 3 DAY 4
AXEL BAR DEADLIFTS
562 x 8
537 x 8
427 X 17

Was on 3hrs sleep and this was all i had time for, had an appointment and this was the only time i could fit it in on Saturday. pulling on the axle is WAY hard than a standard stiff bar. Ordered some figure out straps, cause im definitely going to need them

Found out today the axle bar event is now changed from max reps in 60sec to last man standing. which means heaviest pull wins. Weight starts at 300lbs and jumps from their until you fail. Not sure what the jumps will be, but typically in events like this its 30-50lbs. Based on my pulls on Saturday, i think i could be good for around mid 600's. Goal would be 650. switching to pulling heavier singles this week. shoot for upper 580-600 this week, 610-630 the following week and shut it down until comp

Also, holding off on bulking anymore since the comp is actually happening. Ill be in the middleweight class, which allows up to 231.5. Weight 233.7 on Saturday morning so im good to go there.

Also, signed up for a PL meet in November. Couple guys from the gym were doing it so i signed up. Now some more people signed up so there is like 7 of us doing it. Its one state over so should be a party

Weren't planning on doing low bar and just cutting squat volume back. Not too bad i guess. Wanted 5 with 440 at no more than 8RPE, but kinda misgrooved the 3rd rep coming out of the hole so racked it. going to cut back on squat volume the next couple weeks for recovery purposes

Went up to my old gym to lift on an actual Axle bar, and not a squat bar with fat grips on it like i have been doing. felt way better. went a little heavier than i had planned for. The 605 i messed up my set up with it and made it harder than it should have been. Did the meathead thing to do and threw more weight on the bar and pulled it easier. if i could pull upper 600s or even 700 i would be thrilled

sorry for the lack of updates, back to back 60hr work weeks.

Short on time and motivation this day. 3hrs of sleep the night before. Went for the simple fact it was the first saturday our saturday noon crew could lift together again. Meh bench day, working on some new techniques so took small jumps. In case anyone is wondering, head supported rows you take an incline bench, rest just your head on backside of the bench and row. I prefer to row higher up focusing on upper back than lats with this movement. picked it up from Meadows.

Today felt great despite having zero desire to lift. On my way to the gym i debated getting off every exit and turning around. Sleep has been crap the last week or so. No solid sleep. I also cant wait for the comp to be over so i can eat more food and not have to watch my weight so heavily.

None of the sets "felt " great, but on video they all moved really easy. going to continue to pull both stances, with sumo being easy singles and doubles hammering technique. Will also continue with squatting prior to deads, has proven effect in the past and when you compete, you squat first anyways.

Both days were surprisingly really good. Surprised by the CG pin press. Pin was about 2-4inches off the chest. going to keep these in the rotation for a while.

i probably shouldnt have taken the 670 and cut it at 615, but with everything going on i just pushed it. My strap started slipping at the top and was about 2 inches from locking it out when it slipped out. easy fix. With the SSB work being the day prior, happy with it. 5lbs off my best ever conventional pull with a deadlift bar. cant complain one bit.

Close grip felt harder than it should have. Deads on the deadlift bar felt great though. Still debating between conventional or sumo for future comp. Will incorporate sumo block pulls and slowly transition to the floor and see where im at. Adductors can't handle sumo right now.

Hows your current body weight?

I'm having the same thing with Sumo.
feels great, lots of room to grow, but the abductors feel too stiff and just cant handle what I think I could pull if I was used to it.

bw is sitting between 234-236 depending on day. For my strongman comp i need to be 231.5 so easy cut.

ive actually pulled more sumo than conventional. 733 to 675 respectively. havent pushed and peaked conventional stance in a few years although. yeah, when i pull sumo im also ultra wide, where my toes are just a 2 inches away from the plates. my adductors just not used to it yet after not pulling sumo for 3 months. Im going to integrate Copenhagen planks in also for warms ups and probably post training also to get them up to speed

Last session before comp. bench felt great(been super weird lately, one session is great then the next is bag) 370x2 was at 7.5RPE. Rest of session was just for pump amd blood flow. And to help deplete glycogen stores. Had 40g carbs pre 25g intra and 40g post and am cutting carbs until weigh ins.

alright so heres how the comp went

AXLE BAR ROUND ROBIN
started with 175 and went +50lbs then +40lbs then +50lbs so on and so on. ypu could skip an attempt anytime you wanted amd just move to the next weight in the next round.
600 moved like a joke. easily could have hit 5. skipped 650 to save energy for 690, and put pressure on the one guy in my weight class that hadnt failed. he hit 650, skipped 690 to sew if i would hit it(his attempts were before mine). missed 690 at my knees. knew it was a gamble but felt extremely confident.

VIKING PRESS
i think the weight was around 400. i hit 12, other guy in my class hit 25 and another hit 17.

STONE OVER BAR
275# stone
first time doing stones and was alot easier than expected. obviously some practice with technique work would have been beneficial. i got it over the bar 4 times and missed it at the bar twice. which was all technique from what guys at the comp told me.

YOKE/KEG/HUSAFELL medley
650/275/335
Finished the yoke and keg, couldnt get the husafell up high enough to walk with it. First time doing yoke with any weight, and man, it was alot harder than i thought!

IRON CROSS HOLD
this was the mystery event. cable attachment with a 25lb chain per side, held to your side without elbows bent. got something like 36seconds.

placed 2nd overall. guy in first has competed in worlds and the arnold a few times. dude was 5'6 and every bit of 231. had a ton of fun and meet a bunch of cool people. my other comp in july got canceled so hoping into PL mode. The week post comp i just dicked around and did a ton of machine work. tried for a 700# conventional deadlift on a DL bar but failed at my knees. is what it is

this is from the last 2 weeks
